It's actually rather funny that up until the Great War arc, you could argue that none of the main cast really even approached Jiraiya or Orochimaru level. Jiraiya faced off Six Paths pain with the WRONG intel (from back when he remembered Nagato) and still managed to fuck up three of them and only got shit on when he thought it was over.
Orochimaru was effectively nerfed into oblivion for the entire story by having his arms and therefore his most potent arsenal, his nigh-infinite jutsu spam, sealed away and being left with nothing but taijutsu which he was probably the worst at of all the sannin.

After the pain arc and destruction of the leaf. There's a huge war between the leaf and cloud niggas due to Sasukes chimp out in the village.
After many many many deaths they eventually come to enough of an understanding to stop fighting
Meanwhile the the fight between 'Madara' and Konan happens. It goes down pretty much the same except that when he tries to retrieve the rinnegan it's booby trapped. It explodes destroying the rinnegan along with his plan(which he made up not the real Madara), and almost kills him.
Then the final battle between Naruto and Sasuke goes down. In the end there's no heart filled speech about forgiveness or redemption; they just both die on impact after putting all their remaining chakra into one final attack.
In the last scene it shows 'Madara' who is revealed to be Obito. He's sitting on an ocean cliff in some foreign land watching the sun rise while thinking over his life and the choices he made. He then tosses his mask into the ocean.

What is a clan?
What is a village?
A village is a framework to prevent infighting between clans over resources and land. Naruto said multiple times that he could not be Hokage if he could not save Sasuke.
What is a Hokage?
A kage, is a head of a village as appointed by the ranking elders of that village, including the previous Kage.
Now we arrive at the key issue. How does Naruto come to the conclusion that he must "save" Sasuke in order to be the village leader? Where do those two things converge?
The answer is that Sasuke is an Uchiha. Naruto cannot allow an Uchiha rogue, the clan that is so feared by the Shinobi world, that he grew up in the shadow of its only surviving member. To call himself Hokage when there is someone stronger than him out there, that is an affront to Naruto's ninja way.
In a sense, Naruto is even more self-sure and bullheaded than Sasuke is throughout the manga. The reason he wanted to bring back Sasuke so badly, alive, is because he wanted to prove demonstrably, that Sasuke was wrong and he was right.
That's why the first thing he does when he hears Sasuke killed Orochimaru (because let's be honest, no way did Naruto believe that there was a jutsu that would let Orochimaru steal his body; to have let Sasuke loose for two and half years), is go after his brother. I presume that ideally his plan was to capture Itachi alive and then extort Sasuke into returning to the village, and rehabilitating him. And if he refused, HE would kill Itachi.
Actually that would have made a pretty good story. You know Game of Thrones style.

No, the theme of Naruto has always been friendship period. Throughout the entire show you get to see how friendship can change even the most psychotic of psychos, most selfish of rivals, and even just straight up villains. It has never ever been hard work>talent; it's why even the major emphasis on the beginning was less on Naruto possibly being OP due to a demon inside him or that he was bottom tier in his class but more of his mistreatment due to those things. The fact that some of the people that got friendshipped were so far gone before that happened is part of the point of the theme; that even the most seemingly irredeemable shits can become good people through friendship.
