I wasn't always cripplingly sad, I got mad, I would get happy, even for short periods, I wouldn't just forget those emotions a day later and suddenly forget why I had those emotions to begin with, thus never bringing up the issue again.

One scene, two in the manga, where shinji actually was mad at the guy. Yet it never came up again, there was no added animosity over the event towards his father, nothing. Shinji forgot all about being angry at his dad and it never came up again.
And that's just one example. it's terrible writing.

Wasted a few hours watching this shit, there were like 3-4 decent episodes and that was it, and all of them were at the start.
Half the time is spent on Shinji's stupid nu-male ass being a faggot, 49% is spent on pseudo-intellectual bullshit or uninteresting personal relations. 1% is actually what you want to see.
Not an issue of themes, it's the way said themes are presented. Presenting them in a stupidly pretentious and convoluted manner doesn't add or remove depth, it just makes it annoying to figure out.
TL:DR waste of time, could be condensed down to 6 episodes no problem if they cut the pseudo-sophisticated bullshit out.

Shinji just stops interacting with or seeking out his father for approval, whereas before Gendo betrayed him by forcing him to attack Touji, Gendo's praise was the only thing he really wanted.
