What do you think about Patlabor?
>>
>>139108288

The OVAs and first movie were good.

Watched the first episode of the TV series, didn't enjoy it as much.

2nd movie sucked ass.
>>
I heard it was good, was planning on watching sometime soon.
>>
It's the only "real robot" series I've seen that felt "realistic"
>>
>>139108288
It's the only mecha show that made me go 'holy shit having a giant robot would be convenient!'
>>
watch the OVA series senpai
>>
>>139108288
That it will never have new content.
>>
One of the more promising shows on my backlog, bumped up a few slots by the promise of a delicious tomboy.
>>
>>139108288
I've only seen the OVAs so far, but they're good.
>>
I hate Genki girls so I dropped it after two episodes.

It's a good niwaka test.
If you prefer the "realistic" ovas over the tv series you're a niwaka.
>>
>>139111498
What if you preferred the movies over both?
>>
>>139112250
As long as you don't like the third one you're neutral.
>>
>>139108370
TV really comes into its own around episode 10.

Every Patlabor girl is 10/10.

No except the girl you just posted. Fuck that bitch.

There is no robot girl. Nobody is robotic.
Silly anon.
>>
I like it, but I'm not sure I like enough of it to watch all 50-something episodes of the TV series.
>>
>>139108288
It's fun. Mecha series done right.

I didn't enjoy the Early Days OVA. Can I get over my shit tastes by watching the movies, or should I just stop while I'm ahead?
>>
>>139116796
Just give up, if you genuinely didn't like the OVA you can check out the first movie but you likely won't care for it.

I loved all of it. Except the third movie.
>>
>>139108370
uh..bro second movie is the best one, though only slightly better than the first.

American Noa a qt.

Kanuka isn't that sexual.

It was very very good.

she does got it going on like crazy though.

Is there a better opening credits tha Patlabor 2? I think not

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsMTpSDAGxM
>>
>>139121042
I'm not going to deny that, but none of the Patlabors are sexual. Not Noa, not Kanuka, not Ota, none of them.

Alright, maybe Goto.
>>
Does anyone have a webm of the helicopters destroying the bridges and radio towers from the second movie?
>>
>>139121531
You know, Noa almost seems like too good a pilot for what they're dealing with there. Now if they could manage a system to stop Ota from causing collateral without restrictions like the ones that crippled the Peacemaker, that would be remarkable.
>>
OVA 1 is good.
TV anime is good.
OVA 2 is great.
Movie 1 is good.
Movie 2 is great.
WXIII is good too fuck you all.

I am a failure who didn't read the manga. Anyway, Patlabor is probably one of the most consistently good properties (unless the video games are really bad?).

Why is he so cool?
>>
Movie 2 is just Oshii jerking off, it's almost as bad as GitS Innocence. SoL is Patlabor's true strength.

I feel like some of the TV episodes are pretty lame, like it could have been 25 episodes and been higher quality. I love the characters and character dynamics though, and Early Days is great. Noa Is a miracle of the universe. As is Goto.
>>
Should I bother watching the TV series? I watched the first episode and it doesn't have any of the atmosphere and charm of the OVAs.
>>
How do you watch this series? I see that the movies and the TV series have separate canons, but do they both branch off from the first Early Days OVA? Or is the Early Days OVA only canon with the movies?
>>
>>139123824
Production order.
>>
>>139108370
>>139123558
The TV series is definitely better than the original OVA series, it just takes some time to get going. The OVA series felt really awkwardly compressed, and the last arc was dumb.

>>139119376
>>139122269
How can you fucks think oshii'd Patlabor is any good? He just fucking steamrolled all the character out of the thing. He just tries to turn everything he touches into Kerberos, and Patlabor was the worst possible Oshii vehicle because it's inherently light-hearted.

>>139122752
This.
>>
ova 1 > movie 1 >>> movie 2 > tv > ova 2
>>
Patlabor 2 is pretty much a remake of the first OVA's The Longest Day.

Also, some of the best comedy episodes in Patlabor TV and OVA 2 are written by Oshii, so I can't take anyone who complains about Oshii's involvement seriously.

For me Patlabor is the best mecha, SOL and cop show all at the same time. Even its goofy as fuck moments never felt misplaced.

It's a shame we'll never see a mecha series as good as it ever again why the fuck didn't Oshii make the later series as anime? He can't direct live action stuff for shit.

>>139122752
All of Patlabor is great except for WXIII, which was as bad as Innocence

>>139124599

TV = Movie 1 = Movie 2 > OVA 1 > OVA 2 >>>>>>>> Movie 3
>>
First for Shinobutt.
>>
>>139124815
>TV = Movie 1 = Movie 2
Look, I know there are a couple major camps here, but I think we can all agree that there's no way this is right.
>>
>>139124664
Oshii's fine as long as he's not letting pretentious philosophical rambling get in the way of everything else.
>>
What the fuck, how can anybody not hate what Oshii did to Noa's character in movie 2? It just doesn't make sense.
>>
>>139124968
What did he do to her? She was just frustrated with being known as that weird labor girl. And with not having fucked Asuma yet.
>>
>>139108288
recently downloaded a 1080p version, still have to watch it
>>
>>139123824
OVA1 flows into the movies. TV into OVA2.
>>139123558
TV is better, but the first episode is just there to establish stuff quickly.
>>
>>139125089
>She was just frustrated with being known as that weird labor girl
Which is just completely antithetical to her entire character for the whole rest of the canon.
>>
>>139125553
Given that by movie 2 it's been at least four years since she walked through the door at SV2 I can buy it. It's not like she's said that she dislikes labors, just that she no longer wants that to be all that she is in the eyes of other people. I'm not a gigantic fan of the film but I don't mind that element.
>>
>>139125659
I'd say the main problem is that she doesn't even get any development to that point. She's on screen a total of like five minutes in the film, and it's just to mope around uncharacteristically.

Oshii does this with every film he directs. He doesn't like comedy in his films. He strips all levity out of the source material until this overbearing thematic thing is left. Just look at what he did to Ghost in The Shell. This style of Oshii's made a lot more sense with GiTS than it did with Patlabor, sure, but he still trampled over the original work. With GiTS it's forgivable because the franchise wouldn't have amounted to all that much without him, he turned it into something new that was worthwhile in its own right (despite still being a worse incarnation of GiTS than both the original manga and the subsequent series). But this made no sense for Patlabor. He ditched characters that were built on levity because they didn't fit his vision of a sterile procedural film driven by overwrought themes.

I might even be okay with this. Movie 2 could just be the weird one where everything got super heavy for some reason. If it weren't for the fact that Oshii is so one-note. GiTS 95, Patlabor 2, Jin-Roh; they all have the exact same tone. Every project he's given he bends until it's the same thing as every other thing he's produced. This of course worked best for Jin-Roh because it was designed to be that way from the beginning, by Oshii himself.
>>
>>139125981
Now what makes this very interesting is that he was involved in the formation of the franchise and directed most of OVA1 along with the first movie. It was only Patlabor 2 where he went full GitS on it. I am aware that GitS came out later.
>>
>>139125981
>But this made no sense for Patlabor
Actually, I felt that the themes in Patlabor 2 were enhanced by the material that came before it. Patlabor used to be very light-hearted (except for the Griffin stuff), which added the theme of how Japan is completely unaffected by the wars outside of it.

>Oshii is so one-note
That's not true at all. He directed Urusei Yatsura, the Patlabor OVA, The Red Spectacles, Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai, none of which has his moody tone.
>>
>>139126155
>Urusei Yatsura
I think he has pretty distinct periods, pre- and post-Angel's Egg. Basically after Angel's Egg he seems to have been able to do whatever the fuck he wanted.

>>139126087
>Patlabor OVA
And his mark is pretty heavy on that as well. The whole coup plot at the end was just so fucking dumb and out of left field. There was some cool stuff in those episodes, but it didn't fit with the rest of the OVA series at all, and made no attempt to. The one thing I'll grant him is that The 450 Million-Year-Old Trap is probably the most hilarious episode of Patlabor ever, and I loved everything about it.

>The Red Spectacles
I haven't seen this (live action), but is it really not moody? I mean, it's kerberos. I don't see how that's possible.
>>
>>139126483
>but is it really not moody?
It initially appears to be moody before it turns into surrealistic art cinema. Its a strange blend between serious and silly.
>>
>>139124846
No love for Noabutt?
>>
>>139125981
>Movie 2 could just be the weird one where everything got super heavy for some reason.
The huge change in tone makes a lot more sense when you realize the first movie game out two years before Japan's bubble economy crashed, and the second one came out one year later.
>>
>>139124551
>How can you fucks think oshii'd Patlabor is any good?
He directed early days and the first movie, too.
