Yes and no.
Yes because he didn't betray his dream and went for it
No because there was no choice at all; he's just a puppet of fate. Also, one thing is dying in battle and another is being devoured by otherworldly horrors. The Hawks didn't deserve such a cruel death.

The choice was intrinsically immoral. That was the whole point to it. It's like when Lelouch geassed his own sister. It may have been for the plan but to make a slave of the dearest person to him was arguably the most morally depraved thing he did.
The difference however is that Griffith made the choice for entirely selfish reasons. Trying to absolve him with "oh but he was so pathetic, what other choice did he have" is going down a dark road that allows for any sort of action. Plus he can still be criticized for getting himself in that situation to begin with. In other words, tough shit.

It's strange because Griffith had to value them greatly or else he couldn't have made the sacrifice. They had to be what he valued most and that is what gave the choice such weight.
The way in which he valued them and degrees to which he valued each of them is questionable. We know Guts is the one person Griffith could begrudgingly view as a friend.
Is the Idea of Evil chapter still non-canon? because that chapter takes away from Griffith's choice all of its meaning, all of its weight.
