Sorry for all the delays, but things are finalling wrapping up.

These are just episodes 1-13, but Director's cut should be up by tomorrow and I hope to finish EoE and the whole batch by sunday, although this may be a stretch.

>>139094571
>bitstarve
I said with the SAME filesize. A good lossy encode is all about size x quality ratio friend, and you should know these "ratios" are in the end of day, completely subjective and to the taste of the one watching it.

If you want to bloat the filesize even more than 2gb, than reencoding lossy to lossy is stupid, just watch the original m2ts. And if you want to be REALLY autistic about it, you can always load avisynth filters on MPC 32bits to fix the chroma bleeding issues. Heck, I did it myself.

If you don't like my target filesize, just donwnload Yurasyki 115gb release and stop bitching about something you won't even download. You have been shitposting of Eva BD threads ever since october, who is autist again?

Forgive me if this isn't the right place to ask.

If you're already into the very-slow x264 preset, why not feed a higher efficiency encoder like x265 or libvpx-vp9? Are they not mature enough (I know the 1.5 release of VP9 broke ABI backwards compatibility with < 1.5)?

x265 is only better than x264 at very low constrained bitrates. Something like a ~200 megabytes 1280x720 digital anime would look much better in x265 than x264 at the same filesize. However, at very high bitrate with a noisy source such as this particularly release, x265 becomes very smudged compared to x264. So no, x265 is not mature enough despite all the myth, misinformation and propaganda being spread about it being "universally better than x264" That is simply not true. I even saw threads here on 4chan claiming x265 is better than x264 in all scenarios. Don't believe it.

Even so, I was considering doing a degrained 720p release for eva with small filesizes using HEVC, I even had half a dozen test encodes done. HEVC efficiency gets particularly amazing with SUBME 6 and 6 bframes, its quality almost double (subjectively) at around CRF 19 compared to x264 at the same filesize with regular SUBME 4 (very slow) preset.
But subme 6 is GLACIALLY slow, on my i7, it encodes at around 1.2 fps for a 720p encode. I still did it anyway.

But them, Fussoir made a nice HEVC release, (although a little bit bigger than my target filesize (200mb), so I gave up on the idea.

VP9 is a pain to work with, and when I did some test encodes comparing with x265, it was still worse than it. Actually, VP9 is not even better than x264 in any pratical scenario in my opinion.

>>
>>139100015
Yes, I'm not sure if I'll reencode it or not. I'm doing some test encodes with slightly reduced filesize and improved settings to see if there is significant gain.
If not, I might as well just keep EoE outside of the batch and just do a V2 with a xdelta patch with the new improved subs.

What you guys think? Prefer EoE outside of the Batch?
>>
>>139100471
outside
>>
>>139093167
Congratulations on the release, Sephirotic. You're finally doing it.
>>
>>139100471
Not him but I watched your original EoE encode and the only issues I noticed were a few in the english sub, like spaces before periods/exclamation points or the like if I recall. But the encode itself was good. So you might consider editing the sub a bit if anything and just releasing a patch or a sub file that fixes that if you want to go absolutely mad about it.
>>
>>139100471
Yeah I think EoE should probably be outside the batch as a third file.

What about the BD extras btw, did you ever do those?

>You have been shitposting of Eva BD threads ever since october, who is autist again?
Nigga it's different people, a couple of times it was me. Why do you believe only a single autist can not like what you do?

I just think that using 10bit and raising the bitrate it's worth it even with a slightly bigger filesize. Apparently I'm not alone.
>>
>>139101258
Only a few real obsessives want over 2gb IMO. Once you start getting that large, why sacrifice anything? Just go for the raw.

>>
>>139100889
>So you might consider editing the sub a bit if anything and just releasing a patch or a sub file that fixes that if you want to go absolutely mad about it.

That's precisely what I'm doing. Improving the subs, But I recon I can't improve to encode to less than 8gbs and still making it looking better.

>>139100938
I'll still do them, after the batch is done.

>>139101258
Nevermind raising the filesize, but do you realize that the benefit of 10bit is virtually nill for a bloated grainy source?

Do you realized your monitor is 8 bit, maybe even 6 bit?

>>139101582
Not A TON, but he filtered some grain on some episodes. Most of the episodes of his release were actually smaller than mine due to the Flac audio being over 400mb for a 5.1 track.

Like I said, those wanting absolute no compromisses betwen size vs quality, should probably go for Yurasyk release or the RAWs, but they will be the color corrections me and 2D4U did.

>>139101635
There is only one version of the classic Death and Rebirth so far, mine.

EoE you could go for commie, but IMHO it's too bloated. And the subs they used are the terrible old Manga DVD ones.

Commie clipped off part of the picture which contained information in some scenes just because it is partially black due to cel movement. They're too lax to be doing something like NGE. They should stick to joke releases of modern anime with no historical value.
>>
>>139102054
You have a professional Panasonic Plasma Monitor, yet you rely on Daiz for defining your standards and haven't done your own Eva encode?
kek.

>One doesn't preserve grain, the other is in 8bit and bitstarved.
Like I said, my V1 for most part, have MORE bitrate than 2D4Us, so if mine is bitstarved, his is too.

Like I said, just download Yurasyk's release, it's a good encode, and bloated as fuck, precisely the kind of encode guys like you that fell for the 10 bit meme would enjoy.

Both extremes are bad, those plebs that eat shit like YIFY, and rate it "A10, V10, perfect!" and those that want to be elitist and eats any half-assed overbloated encode thinking just because it carries "10 bit" on the description and fills your hard drive is OBVIOUSLY better.

But the latter is particularly bad, when they never actually tried doing proper double blind comparisons testes and were humbled by how their brain fools them with the placebo effect.

These kind of people are no different than the "audiophilic" community that thinks a Tube headphone preamp with gold plated cables connected to a rare Yamaha turntable will make music listening better than going to a real live concert.

I think you need to work on your reading comprehension.
What I clearly stated is that on certain episodes a "mere" 25% filesize increase can make a difference, even more so when we're comparing an 8bit encode with a 10bit one.
>>139105302
No one is talking about banding here.

>>139105140
anyone with that state of mind should just download Seph's release. If you want quality > filesize no matter what then get 2d4u or a non re-encoded remux.

>>139105302
RX is absolutely right, although the EVA bds had some inconsistent DNR which, together with some blocky artifacts inherently of h264 compression may have cause some slightly blocky-banding in some scenes, but it has nothing to do with modern digital anime poor filtering causing bandnng on skies or flat dark textures. And even so, adding static f3kdb grain on Eva, would make everything looks dirtish and no better.

>>139105350
>These kind of people are no different than the "audiophilic" community that thinks a Tube headphone preamp with gold plated cables connected to a rare Yamaha turntable will make music listening better than going to a real live concert.
Of course it will make it better. First you can comfortably listen to it on your couch, second there is no noisy, smelly, ugly people around you, third there's no distraction at all, fourth you can do something else.
The epitome of stupidity is paying for a concert when you can have the better option for free.

Ok, I'll do some comparisons a little bit later, let me just finish reviewing the sandbox scene from EoE and I'll do it.

It's also important to notice, that static pictures are far from ideal to compare two very similar video files. Rate factor, flickering noisy are interpreted differently by our brain than just pixel peeping two static images. A more appropriated ideal comparison would have been playing two video excerpts and alt tabing between then without knowing which one is which. This is what I did, by the way, while testing for improved enconding settings for my v2. My tab key is kinda of stuck, due to that.

Comparing live music to an attempt at trying to make your home listening experience the best it can be is the most autistic thing I think I saw in this entire fucking thread. There are so many different variables to compare between the two, but I'll say this. You don't go to a live concert for music quality. Though I agree, the majority of those people probably wouldn't be able to consistently pass an ABX test for their FLACs that they love to circle jerk over.

Truth is, fansubbing is ultimately a egotistical thing. No one do it (nor anything in life) for pure altruism, we are all egocentric creatures by nature, so is natural that I receive some hate.
I only did this release because I'm a big fan of Eva and decided to do an encode for my own standards and since most of the effort where already done, It would be nice to release it on nyaa too.

Like I said before, quality x ratio is ultimately subjective. Different people will have different standards of quality, (although many that claim "high standards" are fooled by an elitism trends and are fooled by the placebo effect like I said earlier), so a single release will never please everyone. This is why I really respect what fussoir does, he made 4 different flavous of release with subtitles for everyone to try and fill the needs of everyone. IT would be near pefect if his 1080p version weren't degrained, too bad it was.

I never claimed my release is the BEST for everyone, but criticism of that guy that say my release is "bitstarved" is foolish, because it only refers to HIS OWN standards. It's arrogance to think his standard should be universal the way he says.

If people don't like my release, they are free to grab other releases, there are flavours for everyone, my just happens to fill the multi-language 8 bit range at just bellow 2gbs with multi-format subtitles.

Anyway, let me go back reviewing the EoE subs.

>Comparing live music to an attempt at trying to make your home listening experience the best it can be is the most autistic thing I think I saw in this entire fucking thread.

You missed the point.
I agree to what you said, a living concert is all about the experience, not the pure "audio quality", but I was refering to the specific trend of "tube amps" and overpriced headphones. Tube amps are extremely stupid because they add distortion and unbalance to the audio signal, yet, the Audiophilic community is so blind of EXAGERATED OVERPRICED and OVERSPECED tech (that's the comparison) that they sometimes forget what is more important about music: Listening, not hearing.

Some eps don't need color correction. 1-2 have a yellow tint and so it's for the best to remove that, 19 is awful color-wise and 16 is a mess in a thousand ways. 19 was so bad RX had to do some color correction. 1,don't work with a single Blue-cast for the first half (opposite of yellow) it had to be done scene by scene. On the second half, an uniform blue cast corrected the yellow tint.

2 was more inconsistent than one, had to be done scene by scene. There was very strong dark green cast on the fight with Sachiel.

Worst by far is 19, then 16, then 24, than 22.
24 was a mess, in one shot had a strong purple tint, in the next one, was blue, in the next one was red for no apparent logic whatsoever. Death and rebirth and the Broadcast proved the rainbow casts of 24 was a fuck up on the renewal and not a director's choice. Pic related.

22 had more subtle color casts, but they were on all spectrum.. Very strong blue cast on the nigh-rain scenes, not present on the broadcast, and some yellow and red random casts here and there. Biggest issue of episode 22 was incosnsistent luminance, one scene was perfectly bright the next one, completely dark for no reason.

23 was mostly fine for the second half, it suffered more of the typical underexposure (low light) during the fight with the angel, and Some yellow casts in the first half. I noticed during the fight with armisael, there was a weak consistent red cast for the entire scene, I then noticed this cast was bresent both on the D&R, and broadcast so I realized this was a director's choice (just like on episode 16) and left it untouched.

Episode 21 was the best, I barely corrected colors at all in it, but did it anyway to make a consistent release of the DC.

Actually, Episode 05, 7, 17 and 18, are the following worst episodes, with strong yellow casts. I was planning on fix episode 05, but I ran out of time before I could start it.

Here a three-way comparison between the BD, 2D4U and my episode 02.

I'll do another three-way comparison with episode 12, now.

Look how hideously green Misato looks on this shot which I consider the worst for the whole episode. I had to use some agressive curves here that kinda of flatened the orange stripes of her jacket, but overall made the image better.

For this three-way comparison, just press 1 2 and 3 on the keyboard for switching between pictures.

>And why is the red border's sharper on Asuka's plugsuit?

>>
>>139110550
That is an unfortunately after effect of Awarpsharps' filter for removing chroma bleeding. It's noticeably more aggressive on the red channel than on the others.
Perhaps for episode 12 I should have used weaked strength for it. However, on the map screen, It improved the contourn Of the shadows of the characters, cleaning the bleeding.

2D4U and Yurasyk also used that for removing bleeding, Yurasyk has even stronger Red sharpening than my version, btw.

>>139110315
Well, the biggest issue may be precisely what I mentioned in this post. I'm not very experienced with Avisynth, an Ideal solution for removing color bleeding is actually converting to RGB and treating each individual color channel separetely, Fussoir taught me that, but the process was complicated and It had to be done with custom version of Avisynth plugins. His version has better processing on the color bleeding issue than mine, but also better than 2D4Us. RX used the same plugin I did, a simple awarpsharp pass only on the chroma planes.

For those that don't care much about grain, I think fussoir's 1080p release is definitely better size x quality wise, specially if you discount the audio dubs, it less than 1 gigabyte per Episode.

I receive a lot of criticism for not using pure CRF settings and letting the filesize increase, this may be the biggest issue. I honestly prefer my encode than 2D4Us in most aspects, after all I did this encode for myself, maybe one or other episode that I tried to constrain bellow 2 gigabytes and he left the filesize go wild, (episode 4 and 6, for example) his release may have a little bit more grain, I'd have to do some comparisons to see, but most episodes I checked were barely the same size, due to the over 400mb of FLAC audio he put in his episodes, and thanks to the Degrain he used, mine look a little bit more detailed. However, due to the degrain of RX's release, he gets more bitrate for the edges, so my edges looks a tid little bit dirtier than his.

>>139112907
>Please don't. Even if I don't like something someone has made I still respect their artistic work and vision and aspect ratio is a part of that.

While the academic 2.35:1 format permits some nice artistic creations, truth is that it was created for comercial reasons, to draw more people out of the television and to the cinema.
Many movies are actually mastered in an intermediate format and then cut in different aspect ratios for both the Cinema and Television.
Many movies have special masters for 16:9 as well as 2.35:1, picture is reframed for the television and expanded bottom and top.

While I can't expand bottom and top, I did a rough cut with the scenes framed to 16:9 and it looked good to me.

I think Anno did a good job using the full width of the 2.35 academic format, some shots looks pretty awesome, but it stills annoys the heck out of me, changing the format on a tetralogy. in the middle of it. And 21:9 displays are stupid, I'll never buy one, so I think it won't hurt having the option anyway.
>>
>>139113423
It's still not your call to make. If the filmmakers wanted you to watch the movie in 21:9, you should watch it in that.
>>
>>139112907
Technically speaking encoding takes away from their "artistic work", especially with colour correction. A crop is no different in terms of changing the original work.
>>139113423
As much as I'll still hate the rebuilds, an adjusted aspect ratio for better viewing would be nice. Its a project I'd be interested in hearing more about.
>>139113387
This is true, but really for someone who doesn't want it they can just unselect it in their BitTorrent client. Where he uploads(nyaa), its a fucking mess to have separate torrents all over.
>>
>>139113731
and if the film makers wanted us to watch it with a piss color filter, should we be stuck with that as well?
>>
>>139113731
I already watched in that, many times. It's not like 3.33 is a master piece artsy move that can only be fully understood on it's plenitude.
Heck, the first 8 minutes that aired on the television before the premier and everyone downloaded was actually a professionally reframed 16:9 movie with no Black bars for broadcast. The filmmakers decided to go that route instead of presenting a cropped preview. Pic related.
>>
>>139113841
In the case of the color correction, I think it's the BDs or the aging of the cels that have destroyed the original artistic vision. I mean the character design sketches don't have everyone yellow
>>
>>139113958
Not him but I think 3.33 is a pretty artsy movie. Everyone is dead and we're after a failed instrumentality. Almost nothing happens after the intro until the end but crazy brooding. It's really a maddening piece of work. So many strange red herrings and things the viewer won't understand ever. It's almost like watching NGE again...only shittier
>>
>>139113841
>This is true, but really for someone who doesn't want it they can just unselect it in their BitTorrent client. Where he uploads(nyaa), its a fucking mess to have separate torrents all over.
For me the biggest issue is actually thinking the longevity of the torrent.

Adding the movie may make many people not seeding properly because they decided to not download it.

However, having two separate torrents, may incread the chance of the movie torrent by itself dying earlier. This is why I made a strawpoll, to see how many people are actually interested in a complete Eva Batch.
>>
>>139114109
You should try uploading it to archive.org as historically significant material to try to get it preserved forever, especially for the color corrections, they have a dmca exemption :3

Somehow archive.org has entire romsets on it and no one takes them down
>>

That would be interesting but japanese companies are very stingy and strict about piracy, I doubt they would be quiet about it. Maybe in future years and only the color corrected episodes...

Most people who go with you will most likely use you for EoE as well. Not sure of how many want another source for EoE if they go with your series. I personally think to include it because for one its a batch torrent, and two as you've said EoE will die faster on its own.

It will easily be uploaded to aB just like his other release. The files will not be lost.

Animebytes is an archive site, most things especially something there stay seeded there as well.

I got in the day I heard about it, open registration dead ass easy.

That's true, but for the most part a lot of those single digit uploads have a seedbox or two. The uploader will also typically keep it seeded as to not get their uploads pruned.
