People thought, genre-wise, that this was either a murder mystery or a romance with Kayo and thus were disappointed when it wasn't really either of those things.
I enjoyed it well enough. Shame about the manga cuts, it fails to clarify a lot of Satoru and Yashiro's characters by the story's end because of the 12 episode length. I think as far as audio/visuals are concerned, however, it was superb.

While it did have a few pants on head retarded things added in (Airi's explanation on why she trusted Satoru, Kayo getting together with trap-kun of all people, Satoru landing on a cushion we all saw coming, to mention a few) I think it was overall pretty good, and definitely up there as one of my favorite shows these past seasons. It could have been longer to flesh out some of the characters, but what can you do when all you've got is 12 episodes to work with. If you've read the manga, you're good either way. I thought the Airi reunion was a bit weird, however. Would have liked it more if she was standing in front of him when he followed the butterfly, lowered her camera and said something like "Hey, don't I know you from somewhere?" or some bullshit, and there, end. Just to imply the "Re:Re" had taken effect in some way or another, I guess.

The anime improved the manga in pretty much every feasible way, including cutting out some superfluous stuff, adding cohesiveness and meaning, and making the ending flow so much better with the rest of the story. It's dragged down by its source material, but the effort the staff puts into making it work despite that really shines through, and I really appreciate it.
Still the best directed show of the season, even if it's not my favorite.

The way the scene at the end was composed in which the publisher guy called Satoru "sensei" and how the camera was only showing his coat at first which had basically the same color as Yashiro's in 1988 was probably hinting at that. Also, the anime made no secret that sensei was the villain. What it did was cast enough doubt on that for you to speculate it was a third party, future Satoru, Yuuki, or some other crazy theory.
My biggest complaint is Yashiro is a Mary Sue. He's a teacher, so how does he afford all of these cars, the ability to woo any woman and fight with Child Protection Services, and avoid detection despite murder following every place he's lived?

It isn't a pure mystery story, though. The killer could have been some random asshole with the focus of the story being how Satoru gets a second chance at his childhood, because his future as a failed mangaka and pizzaboy sucks.

I love anime but this is something that always takes away some of the fun. Even really good manga have that up to the point where characters are even talking about what they're about to do even when it's clear. It doesn't make me dislike a series but I think it would be way better if some things were just hinted or that they just happen without an explanation which you don't need since you see what's actually happening. Anime would also get some some re-watch value that way since you'd have to watch it again to find all the hidden stuff or symbolism you didn't notice while watching it for the first time.

This. It had it's flaws but it was still one of my favorite shows of the last seasons, especially this one which I consider as reather weak. I barely visited the threads either not because of spoilers but due to the shitposting because of the pairings and hate due to popularity. Too much of that stuff kinda ruins the fun and post-airing threads are usually way better anyway since shitposters usually lose interest as soon as series end.

I'm not sure about the manga but there's nothing that Satoru could use to show that Sensei was actually a murderer. That's how soundly he was trumped. It suprised me that that wasn't used as a twist.
Am also suprised that Yashiro didn't try and wring the time travel secret out of Satoru. If that was me I'd drag him out of the car and interrogate him until he cracked. I'm also surprised that Satoru didn't get screwed sideways for meddling in time.

It seemed to me like Sensei was still filled with hate at that point. He was already interested in Satoru and his knowledge but the hate was stronger, so he just "killed" him. It wasn't until later that he realised that he lost the urge to murder people. I guess it's a bit like becoming unable to fap to something/someone after you became infatuated with someone or something else.

Well it's just my opinion but i liked way more the kind of romance story with Satoru trying to protect Kayo from her family than the "We have to find the murderer' plot, i would've prefered if the anime had a story that did not involve any murderer and just satoru being actually a child saving Kayo from child abuse before her mom kills her by going too hard on her or something.

I saw some anons posting fake spoilers a few weeks back about Yuuki being the real killer all along. While that wouldn't make sense at all, seeing as he was in jail at the time of Sachiko's death, that would have been a pretty great twist. Better than the lackluster sensei reveal, at least.
