This is why I tend to stay away from Eva discussions; the two extremes dominate the discourse and drown out us moderates who thought it was a solid show but not one of our personal favorites.
People seem to think they have to regard it as a masterpiece, or trash it like overrated garbage. You CAN like it while acknowledging its flaws.
Also, the gundam comparison feels off. Sure, they're both mecha, but there's none of the geopolitical drama or space battles. It's far more character study than sci-fi action story.
