It's a fucking band camp anime. If any show could lose on premise alone, it's this fucking thing. Hell, at least with trapped in an MMO stuff, you know the core problem and primary hook from the get go. Like, I hear people circlejerk over it, and I read an entire thread of this 'kumiko' sitposting, and I still have no idea what this show is about. I've no desire to watch this shit. Fuck this show. Like, look at these fags.
>>139057656
>>139057738
Do they think it's good because they like highschool drama and moe and are the K-On audience? Do they think it's good because it's expertly produced, and has characters that are written to seem natural and human? Are they just huge /u/ fags? Do they like it because of the doujins? Did they never actually play in a band, and think band life is gangsta or something?
I don't know because no one actually discusses the actual show.

From what I hear, it wasn't even the best band show that season.
>>
>>139058016

That's my point, you clown. They have no romantic feelings at all, but the overall work is cheapened because they threw in bait to appeal to /u/-fags when it is completely unnecessary and taints a product that otherwise had no real major flaws.
>>

It's not about that. KyoAni hasn't done two cours in years.

I don't know, anon. Late game Asuka was kinda a bitch.
>>
>>139058243
It's nothing like K-On.
It's a "sports" anime, with music being the sport: young new "coach" who wants to aim for the Nationals with his shitty team, ambitious first years and complacent senpai, harsh training, fight for the places of regular and tension in the club, budding camaraderie almost homo-erotic,...
Free is more slice-of-life than this.
>>

Absolutely backward. Asuka proved herself to be an edgy bitch while Ribbons redeemed herself entirely.

Guy who actually wrote it here, and yes. Conglaturations on missing the point.

I've no idea what the show's 'about' because not only is what I've read not interesting enough to warrant googling, the threads I stumbled into were expressly low-quality and uninformative (like this one).
All I know, I know from the odd webm or promo art, and the premise on anichart. That was enough nothingness to keep me from actually watching it.

>>139058234
No one said this. If I wanted to watch people play instruments, I'd go to a concert. If I wanted to watch cartoons pretend to play instruments, we had Gorillaz for that.

>>139058893
I was in a high school band. Some years, it was fun. Once our music teacher retired, she was replaced with some skinny hipster guy with a high-pitched voice. Nothing was the same.

I don't doubt that it's an accurate portrayal. My chief concern is that I wouldn't watch an anime about a concert band. What's the conflict? The only drama there would take place during or after school, not during band time. Wouldn't that make this just high school drama but with the occasional song?

Very well directed, movie-tier visuals. No complaints other than I'm not a fan of character dramas and I hate Reina with a burning passion.
Just standard Kyoani.
>>
>>139060080
>What's the conflict? The only drama there would take place during or after school, not during band time. Wouldn't that make this just high school drama but with the occasional song?
No because most of the drama is related to the band. Things like the band members not taking practice seriously, members no being satisfied with who gets what solo parts, etc. There's some relationship drama but that last all of one or two episodes.
>>
Pros:
Good characters, mainly Kumiko
Nice animation
Wasn't as boring as K-ON!
Asuka in the first half of the season

Cons:
Too much yuri baiting for no reason except to troll.
Ribbon-chan
Asuka in the second half of the season
>>
>>139060080
And he continues to babble about shit he knows nothing about.

But I really like this show so I'm going to do you a favor and tell you what the primary conflict of the show is. At its core, it's about the main character's journey through understanding what music means to her and what she wants music to mean for her. All of the conflict revolves around this idea.
As far as music, it mostly focuses on how the music effects people rather than the music itself. There's only one extensive performance scene.
If you like character drama, you should watch it. If you like good animation, you should watch it. If you were in high school band, don't be surprised if you get really, really specific nostalgia. I highly recommend the show.

GAS THE RIBBON.

Is it pronounced Ray-Bon or Reeh-bon?
>>
>>139060570
>Asuka in the second half of the season
I really liked this. It rounded her out as a character. In the beginning she's just the quirky upperclassmen who loves the euphonium and teasing the underclassmen. Then as the show goes on, you start to see the cracks in her character. She's a perfectionist, she's focused on herself entirely, she doesn't care about any of the band's politics or drama. She just wants to improve and has no time for anyone else's crap. Even if it's to the detriment of the group.

She drops her bubbly facade a little bit and starts to act more human.
>>
>>139061739
It certainly gave her more depth and made her character more interesting, but I can't help but dislike her.
Like I like what they did, but at the same time I don't like that new her. Not in the "not mah asuka" way, but more like I enjoy hating her now.
>>
>what went wrong?
Only gripe is that the cast was really big and really good but didn't fit the short length. Felt like every side character had a story to tell which (fairly) got sidelined for the more important members. They still did a great job with what they had, I just think the same duration of plot could've worked even better with twice as many if not even more episodes. Absolutely stunning show otherwise, one of my favourites to come outta the decade so far. Can't wait for season 2.
>>
>>139061739
Her attitude makes more sense once you understand her reasoning but sadly that is not covered in season 1 so taken at face value it's just kind of like "Oh, this character is just kind of a cunt now. Okay."
>>
>>139062103
>the cast was really big
Not really. Maybe you think that because KyoAni gave the filler characters a distinctive look, but the cast was your average one.
>>
I'll be very disappointed if they flesh out a romance in season 2.
>>
>>139062243
I'll be very mad if Shuuichi ends up with Kumiko.
>>
>>139062177
Unique designs play a part, sure, but I never felt this way for K-On or Hyouka. I think because we spend more time around the other characters (as opposed to a small clubroom) I got more attached? Like I'd have wanted more Midori and Hazuki, sure, but hell you'll see some unnamed character slowly getting better at drums throughout the course of the show without ever being the focus of the shot or having a speaking line. Characters on the side like that progress throughout the show, and I'd have loved to see it take advantage of that, y'know?
>>
>>139062564
Yeah, the designs for background characters were incredibly good. I also wanted to know more about them, even if it was just something brief, like why Seal-chan carries a seal plush? Silly stuff like that.

Why isn't it okay to diverge from source material? I can understand wanting a faithful adaptation if you're a fan, but for me at least, I'd take a director with an original take and a vision over a by-the-panel adaptation. I'm not strictly defending Kyoani or anything, I just hate this concept in general. Adaptations should feel free to be their own thing.

Would you compare Hibike to a sport anime?
>>
>>139065046
Sure. It's not Ping Pong, but there's competition, practice, passion, teamwork, and a strive for greatness.
>>
>>139065046
Yes.

Brass Bands are pretty much like a sport anyway, if LoL gets to be a sport then Bands, that actually require physical work, could also be considered one.

The show was pretty much built around your typical sports plot: "the underdogs try to win, they lose, they practice and work hard and get to win". They only missed enemy bands.
>>
>>139065046
I've made the comparison to Ping Pong a bunch of times. It's not like the usual sports shounen but it's definitely a competition drama. Where something like Haikyuu is about overcoming obstacles on the path to success, Ping Pong and Eupho deal with more meta topics like motivation and talent and the like.

A bit of a problem for me, other than it wasn't very engaging and feels like it was trying to cater to someone else was the yuri bait too. Fortunately I didn't even make it past the first three episodes and didn't have to worry about that this time but it's definitely annoying.

Only wish Midori could get a little more character beyond "I like music and shipping my friends with random guys"

Don't know how can people say the show is boring. It was so engaging that I felt very nervous before every major performance; Even more that characters themselves probably. And I've never ever been in a band or played an instrument.

They made something simple.
Very simple.
So simple it didn't have any flaws.
And that is the skeleton of the anime.
Then they added a soul to the anime.
That is the music.
Beautiful music.
And then they came up with a nice animation style and beautiful haircuts. Altogether with the cosy brown colour schemes of the anime, this makes up the flesh.

So theres that.
Something so simple that it cannot have flaws, altogether with beautiful music, cool animation and gorgeous haircuts.
All these factors make this show so good.

My biggest complain is the severe lack of Natsuki in the show.
Change Safaya's role with Natsuki's and this becomes one of the best anime I've ever watched.

What's not to get? Ribbons was initially presented as bitchy and villainous, but by the end of the cour she was the most sympathetic character. She had and unwavering, naive, blind devotion, loyalty to her friend and idol. And for that loyalty she was punished in the most ironic way possible: she was forced to sit and watch while that idol was torn down and publicly humiliated in a display that Ribbons herself had been largely responsible for.

There were two major emotion climaxes to this show. The main one was the final performance, peaking during the solo. The other was the moment Ribbons burst into tears after Kaori conceded. The drama between Kumiko and Reina vs Ribbons and Kaori was downright shakespearean. Kaori is basically faultless, she's portrayed as basically perfect as a person, despite not being quite as good as Reina at the trumpet. But Ribbons, through her own arrogant faith in Kaori is forced to drag her through the mud. She is cruelly punished.

And it's this arc, seeing how completely her character has been turned around, that makes her great. She has the most dramatically effective arc of any character I've seen in at least the last year of seasonal anime I've watched, probably longer. Say what you will about the show, or dislike her character for personal reasons, but she was beautifully written.
