Fanart of prestige pieces rarely gets drawn because it attracts a wider audience outside of the core otaku demographic that would be familiar with sites like Pixiv. Plenty of normal people who wouldn't be otherwise into manga have blogged about it. You see people on the streets of Harajuku wearing Punpun clothing. Celebrities have it on their bookshelves. It's a bigger thing than you realize. Hell, Asano is considered to be one of the next greats of the industry along with figures such as Hanazawa.
Bringing up aspects such as sales figures and fanart doesn't really count when it comes to series like this; just look at Kuragehime. Sold under a thousand copies, hardly made a dent on Pixiv but still majorly popular.

A-1 really dropped the ball, but I think if Asano were to relent and have one of his own series adapted (not as if it will happen since he hates the industry) he'd be extremely picky about the ultimate character design. He himself spends an insane amount of time drawing each individual strand of hair even, Subete was probably a different because it wasn't his own work and he was probably commissioned for the designs.
