I'd say the key feature of anime is thast it's animated. It's kinda in the name. So yeah, the fact that KyoAni are one of the only studios with consistently great animation instantly puts them leagues beyond the vast majoritry of studios.
But besides that, they've also produced some absolutely superb shows over their mere decade of productive existence that have influenced the entire medium.
