(Unfortunately for her, the AliciaxAkari continued to exist in the Drama CDs)

Keep in mind I've only read the first 4 volumes, but yeah it didn't work for me. Beautiful two-page spreads but the kitschy sentimentality felt way too cheesy. I usually don't mind kitsch (massive K-On! fan) but I found myself rolling my eyes a lot. That time where they go on a scavenger hunt where the treasure was the experience, or some shit like that. The setting was neat but I didn't really feel like it was being engaged meaningfully. I hate to pull the oh-so-obvious YKK comparison but it all kinda felt like an imitation that didn't quite "get it."

I think its due to Aria's pretty lackluster character interactions. Aria relies pretty heavily on its setting and world, to which i didn't find as engaging as something like Tamayura's group dynamics or Shirokuma Cafe's tsukkomis.
In the end it feels like 20 minutes of nothing to me, but in that time I can read a couple chapters of the manga and the anime's art isn't all that great.

Each season has a different focus though which I believe makes it a little more varied compared to most other Iyashikei anime (though that's mainly because it's one of the longest running series in that genre). I agree that initially the art isn't anything special, but the soundtrack for me does more than enough to immerse me into the world of Aria each episode so I had no problem enjoying the slightly slower pace the anime took to reflect on the scenery at times. Obviously I don't agree with your comment about character interactions as I found them to be engaging and charming from the very first episode. There's also a very slow, but gradual development to the main cast which the anime manages to capture very well especially in the third season to which I actually enjoyed more than the manga due to how well it was handled and by then the art of the anime has improved vastly (though I'd agree that it still doesn't hold a candle to the manga). All I can say I guess is that I can kind of see where you're coming from, but not really as I'm not really sure how you can get nothing out of watching Aria if you're a fan of Iyashikei.
