Well, guys, I guess this is it. These past 2 years have been nice and I'm grateful to you all, but now that I'm fluent in Nihongo (Japanese), I don't have any reason to frequent DJT anymore.

I always thought it was funny how people in our culture like to use curse words so casually in everyday life (usually because they think it's cool)
that when the time comes to emphasize something they find they have nothing available to them to signify "now I really mean it" so they just come up with increasingly unique/aggressive ways to say the same thing.

Studies show people who curse more often are emotionally stronger than those who don't.

Enjoy being a crybaby pussy, bitch.

On topic:

Is there any way to make anki automatically mark your card wrong and show you the answer after a certain time has elapsed? So as to avoid staring at a card for 30 seconds when it's obvious you don't know it.

「行かすわけには」 is あなたを
「行かされるわけには」 is 私を
If one is "I won't let you pass"
the other one is just "you pass won't be let by me"
One is just passive.

There's this game where you earn stars based on your level, if I want to say that I'm trying to level up to get the third star, do I say 第3星に頑張ってみる or 第3星へ頑張ってみる?

>cursing means you're emotionally tough

This is interesting because I've always been regarded as well-spoken and intelligent by my peers but I fucking swear all the time; even when explaining something complex and technical and even during formal meetings.

I also live alone and haven't had a girlfriend since I was in high school. I don't socialize offline at all. I am steadfast in all that I do, and I'm not bouncing off the walls.

You can say 「僕は君を行かすわけにはいかない」 (I won't/can't let you go), but you cannot say 「僕は君を行かされるわけにはいかない」 because you have to replace 「を」 particle with 「に」 to be grammatically correct. But this changes the meaning to "I cannot be made to go by you" (「僕は君に行かされるわけにはいかない」). This expression is pretty awkward even if it's grammatically correct.

Anyone know who the guy is that the news in Japan is going crazy about, the guy who cheated on his wife with 5 different women.
Why is cheating so weird in Japan, they just get forgiven and with a public apology and then everything is fine.

http://www.yukawanet.com/archives/5025977.html

I assume the religious differences mean they aren't so focused on infidelity and the cultural differences like they used to be able to have more than one wife.
>>

Having a little trouble with the following:
捜査当局は、男がパリの同時テロ事件に関連した調べなどが進むなかで追い詰められ
It comes from this:
>ベルギーで起きた連続テロ事件で、実行犯の男のものとみられるパソコンに「いずれ捕まることになる」と書き残されていたことが新たに分かり、捜査当局は、男がパリの同時テロ事件に関連した調べなどが進むなかで追い詰められ、犯行に及んだ可能性もあるとみて、捜査を進めています。
Does Verb + なかで, X, mean that X is occuring within the timespan of the verb? How is this different from 間?At the point 追い詰められ, isn't the subject still 捜査当局? Because it's in passive form, doesn't this mean that 捜査当局 themselves have been driven into a corner or tracked down? I know that with context I can tell that it's the opposite situation but I would like clarification about the grammar.
>>
>>139016138
Can ながら and のに be used interchangeably to emphasize that two clauses are opposite in meaning? For example, in this sentence from All About Particles, it looks like you could use either and it would have the same meaning
>高木さんが体が弱いと言いながら、よく夜遅くまで酒を飲んでいる。
>Although Takagi says he is in poor health, he often drinks late into the night.
Or am I just missing some subtle difference?

>毎日漢字を勉強しているのによく覚えられません。
I haven't really studied how passive is used, however the the dictionary says a common characteristic of the Japanese passive is that the event is not under the control of those affected by it. Is that why it's used here? Does the sentence make sense without the passive?

I don't really know why I stumbled across this, and it's probably still ahead of what I am learning currently, but my understanding is that this can be used to say you did not do something. For example, 知らなかった and 知らず translate to roughly the same thing, right? Japanese keyboards seem to recognize it as a valid sentence, but I'm sort of reluctant to use it because I don't know exactly what it means. Translators also seem widely inconsistent when I try different verbs such as 分からず、寝ず、etc.

Still trying to understand the NHK News, but I encountered a sentence which is giving me some trouble and I have an inclination - but cannot resolve part of it.

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20160318/k10010448831000.html

The sentence is: このため自衛隊は部隊の展開を進めていて、PAC3のほかに、高性能レーダーを備えた海上自衛隊のイージス艦を日本の周辺海域に派遣するなどして北朝鮮に"動きがないか"警戒することにしています。
I understood everything else without issue, but I am wondering if my inclination is correct. The final clause seems to say: "(The JSDF) ...will be vigilant even if there there is no action by North Korea." The weird part is the non-movement matter with the ka particle which I think can be translated as "If there is no movement". It makes sense, militarily, but is the focus on the JSDF watching the North Korea's (continued) non-movement with vigilance (from now) or despite the non-movement (of the past week)?
Also, this article is N2-level right? The only weird words were "破壊措置命令", "周辺海域" and the "迎撃" part of 迎撃ミサイル besides my confusion stemming from the rather complex sentence.

I just woke up and did my reps. Feels fucking great.

I used to be really hung up on mining my new daily cards on the same day I do them, since it gives me a chance to remember them when they pop up in Anki after reading them. But when you have to mine your words before doing your reps, it's too easy to put it off. By the time I've mined my words and can do my reps, it's so late that I'm tired and the words barely stick anymore.

Just mining everything you might need to review whenever you read anything is definitely the best way to go. Even if you end up with 200+ new cards that you'll have completely forgotten you added by the time you get them, it's totally worth it to be able to do your reps first time in the morning.

How do you people learn kanji?
I tried a kanji deck and had a hard time remembering them with no good context for them
I tried RTK, it had no readings so I dropped it
I tried core6k, I felt like I only really learned the words and general shape of the kanji and would keep confusing similiar looking ones

>>139021759
I did core 6k, started reading regularly, used heisig for a while and then dropped it. Since finishing 6k I've been doing mined decks and reading. I think Heisig's story thing is useful but it just wastes so much time. I would probably recommend looking up the heisig number on kanji you confuse and then going backwards through the elements they are made up of instead of going through the whole sequence.

Anyone else think that it feels easier to practice with things that aren't fun?

I can spend hours reading/listening to those more intermediate and advanced Nihongonomori grammar lessons where the lessons are all in Japanese and there are no English subtitles, but it's hard for me to stop my mind from wandering when I try to read a VN or some manga.

As long as everything feels like a chore then I can stay focused because it feels like I'm studying, but as soon as that line between studying and fun begins to blur then my mind switches to free-time lazy mode as if I was taking a break and playing a video game for fun and not for studying.

I dread the day that I finish all of these lessons and I have to switch to fun things. My progress will probably die.

I wonder if the Japanese people on the English equivalent of DJT read books like this and argue about what it means.

>Ef it wuz HIM dat 'uz bein' sot free

>Ef - (Old Saxon conjuction) 1. If, when
>Wuz - (South Scots) simple past tense of be
>Dat - Representing a colloquial pronunciation of that, likely from African American vernacular.
>Uz or Oghuz Turks, a group of loosely linked nomadic Turkic peoples
>Bein (genitive Beins or Beines, plural Beine) - leg of a person, animal or object
>From Middle English sot, from Old English sot, sott (“foolish, stupid”)

>"You retards are never going to learn English if you can't understand context. It's obvious that Tom Sawyer is cleverly utilizing context and a mixture of Old Saxon dialect, South Scottish dialect, African American vernacular, and Old English to tell Huckleberry that he will be the fool when the leg of the nomadic Oghuz Turks is free. He may metaphorically referring to a possible Turkish invasion of the Mississippi River that will happen in a later chapter."
