Has there ever actually been a decent live action anime/manga adaption of a /a/ series?
Does the USA just ruin every Japanese franchise it gets a hold of?
>>
Edge of Tomorrow was good with the original ending.
With the ending they ran with it was just okay. I'd say it's decent.

Live action Guyver: The Bio Boosted Armour was pretty decent. Plus it has Mark Hamill.

Most things come out as shit though.

>>

Old Boy.
>>
The only good live action I've ever seen for a manga was Old Boy's, and that was a Korean movie.

Edge of Tomorrow was okay, but far too clearly Americanised and the the ending took away all the impact from AYNIK's original ending.

The only way I can see a live action working well would be on a work that takes place on a Western setting, but even in that case I would have my doubts, since the way the Japanese like writing things and characters, and the way they consider things cool is different from the American way.

If I had to think of an example, though not anime but a video game, would be Devil May Cry. The original story was fun as hell, but as soon as it was handed over to Westerners (Brits in this case) the story sucked balls, precisely because they tried making it cool in as Western fashion, which took away all the charm from the original story.

There are a few stories I can see working with Americans on the helm - as long as they don't decide to add plenty of edge to them, as it seems to be the norm these days - like Cowboy Bebop and Baccano.
>>
>>139015085
did you read the ch.0 of terra formars? bec the live action is that chapter and its pretty neat actually
>>
Tokyo Tribe was great
>>
>>139014863
Unless you're a shoujofag, not really. Majority of nip and Hollywood adaptations are awful.
>>
>>139015377
All you need is kill original ending was corny and the romance in that with rita was written so childishly.
>>
Oldboy was better than the manga it was based on.
>>
>>139015377
>Bebop and Baccano
>not Monster
Monster was literally made for Del Toro to adapt for live action
>>
>>139014863
Edge of Tomorrow was a GREAT adaptation, some people may not like the original ending but I still think it is a great as an adaptation from a japanese media.

I think there are a lot of material to be adapted without problems, since the superheroes fad seems to be entering its end with the terrible reception of BvS I could see Hollywood starting to adapt random japanese manga/novels because fuck creating an original movie.
>>
>Peach hip girl and shark skin man
>volcano high
>ichi the killer
>speed racer
There are quite a few good to great ones.
>>
>>139015537
Romance in Edge of Tomorrow wasn't any better, don't kid yourself, it was just Americanised.

The ending in Edge of Tomorrow was your regular Hollywood, Tom Cruise film ending. At least the one in AYNIK had some impact, but Americans would never have the heroine/love interest dying.

>>139015661
Monster is amazing, I forgot about that one.
Though, considering this is Holliywood, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried changing the story to make space for Holocaust remembrance. Not trying to go /pol/ on this, but I wouldn't be surprised if something like that happened.

There was this Western manga that featured a 7-feet tall native American on a quest to avenge his massacred tribe by hunting down the platoon of soldiers responsible. On his side are: the local whore, a Japanese laundry worker, his pet wolf, a US agent posing as a drunken preacher, and a rogue US army colonel.

I would love to see Taratino adapt it, but I don't think there's that many tall actors that can fit that role. Liam Neeson's tall but he's too old.

It's not just the USA. Japan makes shitty live action shit all the time. I'm especially pissed off that their making alive action of I Am A Hero. Just..why? Why not just make original movie plots? It pisses me off when all they do is use crappy CGI and the cast is a bunch of pretty idols. Sometimes I wish anime would just die. At least anime in its current form. I'm sick of the cliche shit. Sick of the unrealistic fanservice every 10 seconds. Sick of the same old plots, with the same old "power of friendship" shit and series that jump the shark. I rather rewatch an older series like Spice and Wolf or NHK, than have to push through some slice of life, moe, "MC-kun, dice ski!" shit. What happened to anime?

It's not just the time resets, it's the setting. It takes place in the military during an alien invasion, where one special hero can emerge and save the day against all odds with his video game reset powers. Emily Blunt's character was a watered down western tsundere too.

There's only really been three live-action American adaptations to date.

Edge of Tomorrow was amazing.

Speed Racer was "fuck you I liked it" tier at worst.

DB:E was fucking terrible.

So it's pretty much a mixed bag, which is leagues better than video game adaptations which have never produced a good film. Don't know why people associate American adaptations of anime as something bad when there have only been three and most didn't turn out too bad.
>>

because this totally isn't the case unless time reset is involved

> It takes place in the military during an alien invasion, where one special hero can emerge and save the day against all odds with his video game *insert power* powers or just a "normal" person with touma-like plot armor

that's pretty much most hollywood movie, but you are stressing how time reset is so different when it really isn't
>>
>>139018809

I'm not joking. All of them are weebs. And by that time Efron and Pattinson were desperately trying to escape from their teen girl movies actor typical role, and Williams was trying to keep himself busy so he don't commit sudoku.
>>
>>139019663
Because anyone who decides to have an opinion on American adaptations should a somewhat refined taste in what American cinema is actually like. Therefore, they would be fairly used to being let down and disappointed when it comes to Hollywood showing up in terms of screenplay, casting, direction etc. Anything that would get an adaptation in the first place would have to be popular enough to sell worldwide while also being able to win a domestic box office. Think back on some of the greatest American films of the past 5 years. I can only mention a handful that are worth remembering and most of them saw a very limited theater run. Why would a jew pay licensing fees to some gook just to make sure the original vision of something like Akira is adapted properly? They could just call it Teenvergent and make the exact same amount of money.

TLDR; Nothing worth adapting properly would ever make enough money for investors so it would take a miracle for the proper source material to mesh perfectfly with domestic box office. Something like Edge of Tomorrow is once in a decade type of cinema where everything fell into place.

For some reason in the shower the other day I was thinking of 80's cartoons that could be turned into the next attempt at a nostalgia based action movie to introduce a new toyline. and I immediately thought about the Centurions. basically action heroes that can be equiped with various exo suit weapons. I thought it'd be especially neat with some modern practical effects (think of the jet suit men).

anyways. i'm straying off topic here. This idea also made me realize that usually they add in a female hero because of womyn and I figured this could be an excellent way to sneak the airplane boots from strike witches into a holywood movie.

Hope you enjoyed my blog.

Not as often as the Japanese do.

They literally adapted an episode out of City Hunter, but with more Jackie shenanigans

As crazy as he is, Tom Cruise movies are usually pretty watchable. Edge of Tomorrow blew me away - went in with 0 expectations and left impressed.
>>
>>139017823
Death Note movies sucked stop being a weeaboo and develop some critical thinking skills. Dramas are just people standing around talking anyone can make them seem watchable.
>>
>>139022266
The thing is that it was more a Jackie Chan movie than a City Hunter movie.

At no point during the movie are we convinced that Jackie was playing Ryo Saeba. He was playing Jackie.

That fight scene is basically Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World two years earlier.

Seriously, Speed Racer was such an awesome movie. Shame it didn't do well with critics or audiences.

Rurouni Kenshin (played by Den-O)

Umimachi Diary was good. I haven't read the manga, but the movie as a lone product was good. Directed by Koreeda, so it has a very nice aesthetic, and the acting is of that of a legit movie and not the stupid attempts at anime reaction faces and bad acting that you usually get in anime/manga adaptations.

They already did. chronicle was basically Akira in found footage style

And Elysyum was Gunnm (even though it seems its going foward after all)
>>
>>139020179
The original novel reminded me of stereotypical Japanese falling over himself at the finish line.

No relay should of existed in that end scenario, what makes it ok to just have one when they are suppose to have lost their power / connection.

I forgot about chronicle. That was a pretty good movie. What all this commercialized capeshit should strive to be, but never will.

One thing cinema will never be able to adapt is SoL moe though. Is there any medium besides anime that can give that special feeling when watching cute girls do cute things?

This. Berserk has is mostly set in medieval Europe anyway, so it already has a western feel. And the fact that its pretty dark would translate well into live adaptation. But it would be hard as fuck to make all the gore apostles, and fights not look like shit. How would you even play something like the fight between Guts and Zodd on the hill of the swords? Moving absurdly quickly with gigantic weapons would be nearly impossible to play clearly.

First Gantz movie was a solid 8/10 adaptation. The second one was meh...

If you ask me, I think they should've just forgotten the whole manga plot and team, and come up with some original idea with another team, maybe somewhere outside tokyo. We would've lost Kurono, but the movie's Kurono wasn't even that great in the first place.
