Accelerator in general is what made this series great. You don't have to like his personality or his methods to agree he's well written, and that his relationship with Last Order is one of the best in the series.

You only need to read two things.
Index LN: Start with volume 13 (the last arc of index 2) just to get a grasp of things, then read "SS1" and you can go on from there. Volume 15 is where accelerator comes back to fuck shit up.
Railgun manga is the other. No accelerator after the sisters arc but completely worth it for the daihaseisai arc and GUTS.
