Why do a lot of people hate mecha anime?
>>
Because 99.99% of them are garbage, especially Gundam. Glorified Toy Commercials.
>>
We don't hate them, we just generally don't care and find the general aesthetic of them to be off putting. Then things like Gundam's pseudo continuity/Macross' idolshit etc. just act signs to keep out and leave it to the bunch it does appeal to.
>>
I thought /a/ liked giant robots
>>
Gundam Wing and it's children
>>
>>138949389
Pretty much that.

And it doesn't help that most mecha anime looks the same.
>>
>>138949377

The one in the OP is just a mix of bad writing, direction, and action. I find people liking it shocking.
>>
>>138949377
Because most people only watch animu for cringy teenagers trying to "find love".

Mecha anime is awful and the people who watch it hold it to an entirely different(lower) standard than most because it's usually shit and their plots about the worst government and military representations in fiction are "serious war stories that're better than your moeshit" when they don't even know what moeshit is.
>>

Mechs can be fun, but it always seems a bit silly for me.

Eh, I can't disagree, but I have to admit the original series had its charm. Tokyo 2040 was just horrendously dull, to the point that even the dub managed to improve on it purely by giving the characters a facade of an actual personality.

I don't hate mecha but I do hate CGI. It's tougher getting into a genre when there's no contemporary reference points. I'll watch Macross one day but for now it's just another name on the backlog.

It does, but it's nearly ruined by crap writing and at times shit choreography. Never expected to be so bored while watching it.
>>
Because they have awful taste and like to pretend their shows are better. Plot is not and has never been a strong point for anime of any kind. People who actively avoid shows with mecha in them have simply deluded themselves to believe this isn't true. You only get a Katanagatari every few years. It's better if you can actually enjoy the Symphogear you get in between instead of writing everything off like it's a Gundam AU.

Not like you won't be watching a seiyu-centric moe series anyway. Might as well watch something with cool mechanical designs an some fight scenes. Daily reminder NNB was considered AOTY unironically.

Bubblegum Crisis in general feels like something that had potential to be pretty damn good, but never bothered to pick up on that. Like I said, the aesthetic of the original series was pretty damn good, and taking that and making it into a properly structured series, ala what 2040 attempted (and failed at), is something that could definitely work.

Otherwise, yeah, I unfortunately have to dump it along with Devil Hunter Yohko into the basket of "pre-Sailor Moon girl sentai fluff".

I love mecha but mecha died after the small super robot comeback in the 90s. There's only like 3 I've enjoyed post-2000
Overman King Gainer, Kotetsushin Jeeg, and Shin Mazinger Z-hen.
Tetsujin (2004) was good too but not because of the mecha.

People weren't memeing when they said TTGL was practically a Getter Robo rip off.
>>
>>138950568
No they aren't. Real robots operate within well defined rules in their setting. Original Gundam didn't pull out a new power out it's ass when it was losing every arc or so. If you're referring to their power sources they nearly always are well defined in the setting with what they can or cannot do. Super robots like Getter or TTGL get powerups when the pilots scream loud enough. They pull out new moves without getting new equipment most of the time.

There's a difference between role play and self inserting. Role play is where you pretend to be another person. Self inserting is where the character is supposed to be a representation of the viewer and acts similar to them.

>I don't know percentages

There's a heavy sort of barrier for many non mech fans. A lot of mecha tend to be very self referential and constantly make allusions to previous mech works and old Japanese media in general, partly because a lot of the people who still regularly make mech shows are pretty old industry vets. A a result a lot of people just don't "get" mecha to be frank. Only Code Geass and Gurren Lagann managed to join two completely different generations together and that was 10 years ago.

So were you born retarded or did you work to get this good?

Reread the post dumbass, I said Gurren Lagann and Geass were the only two shows that managed to unite two generations together. That means it had things that both generations could enjoy, the reason newbies could get into it was because it did not feel completely foreign to them but older people could still enjoy it because of like you said allusions to Shin Getter Armageddon and other old shows.

And why the hell would I use something non-mainstream as an example of "mecha shows that were popular with everyone"?

It has to do with personal taste and that the most of the kids nowadays don't seem impressed with the concept of giant robots, they just want something that just "feel" realistic for them. My best friend don't like mechas because they aren't realistic, but still he love battlefield 4, counter strike and watch the "too deep" animes like shingeki no kyojin, tokyo ghoul, etc.

Z and ZZ were using newtype powers, which while they aren't exactly realistic weren't really part of the mech's specifications other than the biosensor allowing the mech to react better to the pilot. It's more of how badly newtype powers were defined.

Your whole point is that mechs can do things better than tanks. Problem is they're incredibly expensive to build and maintain, which is the whole point. There's no point in building a machine that can do everything but costs more to build and maintain than a bunch of less complicated stuff put together. Even if you say that manufacturing mechs will eventually become cheaper, that's because the raw materials going in are cheaper as well, which are the same things that go into making tanks and trucks. Until something comes along that makes mechs more viable than trucks and tanks in a war setting, there's no reason to use them.

People don't like mecha for the same reason a lot of people don't like harem/fanservice-y anime. They fall into the same pitfall of cutting a lot of corners in plot, characters, and pacing because they assume as long as they keep showing you mecha/tits, you'll keep coming back. If you want more out of your anime than just fanservice, both genres end up severely lacking, hence why most people don't care for them.

Another way to look at it is take the mecha out of a mecha anime or the fanservice out of a fanservice anime, would you still watch it? For a lot of shows you wouldn't, and for those that you would, it's generally considered one of the gems of it's genre. A perfect example is Evangelion which isn't even technically mecha when you really thing about it.

>Remember CODEGEASSCODEGEASSCODEGEASSCODEGEASS or our daily Eva threads?

Those shows are both bad, though. They're basically waifu faggotry with annoying male characters.

And you have ugly noodle people animation.

I would rather see a big book of technical details of the Eva-01 than more LOL Rei porn. Or even diagrams of the Geofront.

>You only get a Katanagatari every few years
We get some Nisio Isin garbage every two seasons.
