Because it has a certain stigma among Japanese. It's not a uniquely Japanese thing, but the societal pressure is ultimately what makes it worse to Japanese. Japanese women often shift into "mother mode" out of "wife" mode and it leads to sexless marriage often. Again, that's not a uniquely Japanese thing but it is common apparently.
Then you've got the problems of who raises the kids and does the housework while one or the other spouse goes to work... It's a turbulent time for any parent, but Japanese have it pretty bad.
