America (and I guess most of the West) focuses on TV shows. They do a pretty decent job at it too.

2D animation is a dying craft.
A few years ago CG anime wasn't a thing outside of some movies and early attempts. But then shows like Arpeggio and Sidonia showed creators they can rake in Otaku money with full CG.
Now every season has 2 or 3 full CG shows, some of them MMD-level crap. Every single anime has at least some CG cars and CG crowds. Idol dance scenes are routinely done in full CG. More and more things will be done in CG, until the only thing not CG will be the backgrounds.
The Otaku are not helping either. Shit looking crap like Sidonia gets accepted, while visually clever attempts like Etotama fail.
