The whole show was a bore, really. It took, what, 6 episodes to get to get to the first fight scene?
Most of the characters sucked. Kirei and Waver were fine, Saber was dull as a rock, Kerry was melodramatic to the point of comedy, and everyone else was either one note and/or barely got any screentime.
The pacing was terrible. The afformentioned start, Caster was built up as the midboss of the series but he carried over 3 episodes into the second cour, then suddenly two whole episodes of Kerry flashback, leading to a rushed finale.
Most of the fights weren't even that good. If these are supposed to be supercharged heroes why does it look like they have merely human speed and power, not much animation to them, the batcave duel was lame and interrupted by Lancelot fight, etc.
Only good things were it looked pretty and had a nice atmosphere. And I'm a filthy secondary who read the VN afterwards and liked it a lot. I'd think that might have been a big reason since looking back Zero generally doesn't work as a standalone story, yet most of its fans also started with it so I don't know what to think.

I love Diebuster but I have one big gripe. They got rid of the time dilation. That was my favorite theme from Gunbuster, it's what makes the show unique and gripping. The idea that every second you spend in deep space is time quickly passing on Earth and your entire life is fading away every time you leave and come back.

On a bad day MAL makes /a/ look comparatively down to Earth and well adjusted on what it considers a great work of animation. The thing is community hype is god there, if something doesn't get a fuck ton of advertising and community hype around it it usually doesn't get any sort of attention at all which often results in some of the stupidest fucking shows getting labelled the greatest thing ever because they were big loud and stupid enough early on in their runs to garner the requisite amount of hype.
