Their dynamic is complex, but basically Horo wants Lawrence to become somewhat of an equal partner for her, whereas -to her frustration- he mostly tries to appease her.
In the end she decides that someone who can drag her up form her lowest point is good enough and things get pretty lovey-dovey from there.
But I agree with you, I got kinda tired of Holo's shit in book 6 and wasn't fully back on the hypetrain until book 13 or 14.

it's a matter of taste I suppose.
personally I liked reading a love story where the characters don't start off being perfect for each other and have to do some serious growing instead.
The story does drag its feet though and the characterisation isn't always consistent. The author said at some point he basically forgot how his characters worked internally at some point and i think after book 5 or 6 he said he felt like he'd already told his story and didn't know how (or why) to continue and it shows.
