I think the in media res narration, the jumps between future, past and present as well as no exposition repelled people. Most people want mindless entertainment.

The thing delaying me from saying this was my favorite anime last season is that it's unfinished. But I'm reasonably confident the 2nd cour will satisfy.
Conrevo has an interesting story to follow. The benefit of those time skips is even world building flashback episodes would feed you some speculation material at regular intervals. Looking back on 2015 there weren't strong stories in most of the popular shows, only Euphonium.
