So apparently the animation software used by Studio Ghibli is going open source on the 26th.

This seems pretty huge. Do other studios use this package too? Seems like a cool way for developers on /a/ to potentially have a meaningful hand in anime production.

If nothing else it's huge news for animation hobbyists.

Another win for open-source software.

I don't see what license they chose.

That'll be clear on the 26th. It probably wasn't included in the press release because most audiences have no clue what those mean.

I'd bet on it being MIT/BSD, but GPL is a decent possibility too.

It's not really about winning anymore. It's about not losing. Take MS for example, their entire Azure strategy is cannibalizing themselves as they work for example with Red Hat, SUSE, to provide meaningful Linux experiences. MS no longer want to provide products, they want to provide services, and open source and the cloud are facilitators for that.

Go and read Ubunchu, right now. It's free and put under CC-BY-NC.

Not really. Sure good tools can make the work a bit easier but people are fast to forget hundreds of artists usually involved.

You're thinking about angry little artists selling their drawing in kilograms while resenting the other people involved in the project because they make more money with less work(VA my ass)

Passionate people doing it as a hobby may surpass expectations(remember that guy animatin his wifu's clip for 7 years) .

Rough Draft who produces Futurama uses it.

All these tools anime companies use are just to automate the coloring and archiving of frames. They're not puppetering software like the ones used in the west, anyone thinking well get to see more sakuga because of this is a retard. Ghibli animation is overrated and kind of garbage anyway.
