FASA officially licensed the designs from their respective Japanese owners because if you're going to make a game about giant robots, who better to turn to that the Japanese? Harmony Gold also licensed the Macross franchise at about the same time.
FASA sued Hasbro for using Macross imagery they hadn't licensed to sell toys; FASA believed they were owed compensation for images they essentially legally owned in the United States. Although FASA won the litigation, they never got any money from it. They feared that potential litigation from the use of licensed designs could potentially bankrupt their little company, so they decided to cease using all licensed designs. Eventually, they decided to stop using any design they didn't own all the rights to, such as designs that were original creations for BattleTech but which rights were held by the creator or a third party.
All in all, Harmony Gold had nothing to do with FASA's licensing problems.
In the end, we get a superior end product, like the new redesign of the Marauder/Glaug/Officer's Battle Pod mech.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as a Mech, is in fact, メカニカル, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Mecha. Mecha is not a genre unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning concept made manifest by the existence of vehicles, military equipment and of course, robots, comprising a full concept as defined by MAHQ.
Many posters use a modified definition of the メカニカル term every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of メカニカル which is widely used today is often called Mech, and many of its posters are not aware that it is basically the Robotech term, developed by Harmony Gold.

The general idea of BattleTech is that while the materials have gotten lighter, their bulk and size really hasn't. I always found the battletech mech designs laughable as fuck. Their proportions are all wrong and their overall look is just goofy.
That artist they have working at PGI is the one redeeming part of that company. Is redesigns are amazing. They're instantly recognizable as the source mech, while having a cohesive look and theme AND they look good.

The designs of the toylines they rehashed into the first two years, yes, but Floro Dery is Filipino, and was responsible for the TV only characters, as well as the movie characters and some of season 3 (until he got fired and his assistants took over)

No amount of armor will actually help against getting hit by a Destroyer, considering the pilots will always be facing hundreds of them and just stumbling from getting grazed will get you stomped in a few seconds. Armor doesn't really do much against Laser class unless there's so much of it that the mech can't even move.
Western mechs are shit because they take themselves seriously. Any mech franchise that takes them seriously is trash. There is absolutely no niche that a mech fills in the context of modern warfare.
