Journey to the West might be based on a chinese story but I believe there is enough japanese based stuff to warrant a thread. Which is your favorite japanese manga or anime based on Journey to the West? Hard mode: No Dragon Ball.
I'd probably go with The Monkey King by Katsuya Terada. A violent retelling of the story in color. I also like the two two interpretations by Akihiro Yamada, who did the artwork for a Playstation game and a novel, but they where not related. I also have a soft spot for Gensomaden Saiyuki.
