Did you really read the manga? Satoru started this story with a trauma. Because of that he couldn't trust others and himself. He couldn't open up to others, and couldn't put all his heart into achieving his dream. He was drifting away. The one who helped him change the most was Airi. She was the first to believe him, to help him regain his trust in others, and also taught him to believe in himself. She also taught her to never give up on his dreams. Meeting her in the end makes a lot of sense from a thematic stand point. Maybe the execution could have been better, but to me at least it's more important for things to make sense thematically.

I actually thought the coma was a pretty good move. I didn't know how the hell he was going to go back to the present, and I thought it was obvious he couldn't stay in the past and live his live from there all the way through. That wouldn't have been right because it would have allowed him to affect history way too much. The coma was a good idea, because it also allowed his friends to make their lives on their own. To do things they might not have done if Satoru was there, and I don't think Satoru had any right to influence their lives that way.

He always trusted Yukko and always believed he was not the one who killed the children, the same can be said when he trusted in the manager. Airi helped Satoru by giving him the courage from her trust in him to go back again, not to trust others. As for opening himself up that credit goes to Kayo, by being able to meet someone who was similar to himself he learned he needed to change in order to help Kayo. The entire speaking your mind gag was showing how Satoru began to be more open, and this was most common when he was around Kayo, it is not a trait from his childhood it's something he still did in the future. Airi had her part, but you're giving her too much credit.
