1. Asuka was a fanservice girl the minute she was introduced. Only later episodes change that. She only became essential to the story through development and the fleshing out of her character.
The point to take home here is that no character is anything until developed and fleshed out in tact with the story. Therefore, Mari being introduced carries no problem, just as introducing Asuka has no problem, the problem occurs when they fail to make anything out of the characters.
NGE made something out of Asuka, but Rebuild refuses to make anything out of either Mari or Asuka, as they are both fanservice. Mari then having less screentime, is actually the least of these movie series problems. She's just a scapegoat because she doesn't have many fans.
2. Kaworu is the worst thing about Rebuild, and the problems attributed to 3.0 exists primarily because of Kaworu's character.
His importance in NGE is overstated, and you're wrong that he is the first one to tell Shinji nice things. Misato among others exist. Then just "saying nice stuff" doesn't make Kaworu a good character or an all that important one. All of them had impact on Shinji, Kaworu was the last in a line and so the impact isn't Kaworu's alone.
Kaworu in Rebuild however, is there since the first movie for no real reason save for fanservice. He has more presence, but he has less impact and character. He doesn't add anything to the story.
This is what I mean by "presence without justification". Kaworu is put there simply to be there, as fanservice. He lacks character and impact despite being allotted more story real estate.
Not only that, Kaworu makes everything worse because the storyline he has required everything else to be destroyed. The timeskip, the destruction of the world, and the ruination of other characters happened because Kaworu needs to be alone with Shinji for the fanservice to have effect.

Mari talks with all the pilots, goes to the school, Convinces Shinji (face to face) to pilot Unit-1 during the 10th angel attack at the watermelon field; kissing him...
The script was later remade (again) to what we have now.

It explains why during the Zeruel battle (when it hits unit-2 a second time) the camera zoom's towards Mari's left eye (implying it getting hit), yet later we see that it's the right side of her face that's injured.---Originally Asuka was in Mari's place and the scene showed how she lost her eye. The aforementioned scene was a recycled element from the earlier draft-and the animators just forgot (or were lazy) to edit the scene.

Why is her medical tank/casket/coffin-thing be surrounded by the same pillars that are on top of Bethany Base and Unit-01 post Pseudo Evolution. To my understanding, these pillars are a means of keeping something in, or keeping something out.
Recall, if you will, the Nemesis attack on Wunder Fleet. There's one of these pillars on board a ship which the Nemesis attacks and destroys, seemingly as a priority.
