What was the purpose of making Asuka and the others remain kids in 3.0?
It would have been so much better to see how different the characters were as adults. If you wanted to go the full /ss/ route they could have made Shinji remain a kid while the others grew up.
Ultimately I think making the eva children adults would be a good way to force some legitimacy on them. In 3.0, it's strange how Asuka and Mari have been at it for 14 years yet act pretty much exactly the same. Making them adults would force the producers to change their personalities in a meaningful way.

Which is odd, because 3.0 is arguably the least cash-grabby of the Rebuild movies. 1.0 and 2.0 are for the most part the same old Evangelion, just with a few details tweaked here and there and looking shinier. In other words, just the sort of thing lots of existing fans of the series will snap up because it's the familiar thing they like improved, but not changed enough to become unfamiliar.
3.0 takes things in a whole other direction, turning everything we knew about Evangelion on its head. And Anno has to be aware that a very common fan reaction to anything being different is "they changed it, so now it sucks". And he did it anyway, which suggests to me that he's making it because it's genuinely a film he wants to make, and not just pandering to get more money from the franchise.

It's following the same "Shinji is isolated from people for reasons and meets Kaworu, who dies due to shenanigans which will lead to the finale, he's also traumatized by Rei clones along the way." Except Asuka's development and role is drastically diminished to fodder fighter. It's like exactly the same formula but in a tweaked setting with worse characters.
And let's not pretend the movie wasn't chock full of fujoshi pandering and marketed with it. Even the waifus are still super appealing to otaku, look at all the art and doujin Asuka generated. The females basically revolve around Shinji since the start of Rebuild till now and 3.33 doesn't change that. When we see Asuka and Mari briefly, it's only Shinji they speak of to bait shippers. Same for other females. We don't get anything else but muh Shinji feelings.
Khara knows what appeals to younger generations and are doing it. Nothing inherently wrong with it, but let's not pretend any of the rebuilds are high art 2deep.

The Rebuilds are shit, that's why. Despite people claiming that 3.0 was the best because it was the one that departed and did something new, it was basically the same shit with a new coat of paint. All the characters pretty much look the same with new outfits, the movie is pretty much an extended episode 24, and felt like a ploy to push more merch for these same exact characters.
