I just finished watching spirited away and I am trying to understand what no-face represents. Halp
>>
>>138807079
I once read a anime review book and the author(a psychiatrist) said he is the representative of today's youth who was brainwashed by consumerism to the point they have no identity left and just "fed" on whatever external environment shove in their mouth. When he met the MC who is the only one genuinely nice to him he try to win her with money/gold, as he thought everyone care only about money. Make of that what you will.
>>
>>138807318
thanks anon, thats pretty awesome

There's a theory that Spirited Away is about prostitution
No face is the rich client with endless gold

Nothing the movie is just a load of shit, people pretend it has some sort of meaning in order to be able to circlejerk about it instead of watching anything that carries a real message.
>>
>>138816743
>Real message
How a movie with a unreal message would be like?
>>
Is Spirited away the most overrated Ghibli film? It's a good movie, but gets infinitely more praise and attention than much better works from the same studio.

That interpretation I think makes the most sense, especially considering Miyazaki's other films. He frequently covers war, capitalism, the environment, and other left-wing topics.

Remember also the parents at the beginning? "It's all right, daddy has his credit card"? She literally ends up in her position because her parents think money can right any wrong, which is, sadly, exactly what our society teaches. Carelessly break someone's leg? Oh, just shell out a bunch of money and it's all better. It's precisely this attitude that Miyazaki detests.

Her parents even turn into pigs, which was obviously done to portray them as consumerist/capitalist in a literal way.

There was a really good analysis about the themes in Spirited away that I read a long time ago, but I didn't manage to find it. So here's a bit from wikipedia:
>Along with its function within the ostensible coming of age theme, Yubaba's act of taking Chihiro's name and replacing it with Sen (literally, "one thousand"), is symbolic of capitalism's single-minded concern with value, illustrative of the film's exploration of capitalism and its effect on traditional Japanese culture.

>Yubaba is stylistically unique within the bathhouse, wearing Western dress and living among European décor and furnishings, in contrast with the minimalist Japanese style of her employee's quarters, representing the Western capitalist influence over Japan in its meiji period and beyond. The meiji design of the abandoned theme park is the setting for Chihiro's parents' transformation, the father reassuring Chihiro that he has "credit cards and cash", before their morphing into literal consumerist pigs.
>>
>>138817177
>real message
Is this a new buzzword?A message doesn't become unreal just because you can't relate to it or because you think that's poorly conveyed. Most anime have clear, real messages, whether you agree or not with them is another story.
>>138817221
You could say that. However, I can't help but to think that the only reason Spirited away gets this much praise compared to other anime films is because it was the one with the most exposure in the west.
>>
>Most anime have clear, real messages
They have nothing to do with real world. No one can relate to them. They do not work and make no sense. That makes them unreal.

>They have nothing to do with real world.
That's really not true. Even the most retarded anime have clear messages with relation to the real world, they're just told through magic and/or unreal situations(similar to how Miyazaki convey his messages). Stop parroting quotes from Miyazaki without looking at the context.

No-face isn't really the malevolent entity some would suggest. A lot of people argue it represents gluttony or some other negative characteristic but in reality No-Face is just a reflection of the environment it is in.

The reason why No-Face becomes such a malevolent entity isn't a consequence of its own inherent corruption, but rather the corruption within the bathhouse and the greed and excess of the people living in it. The reason why he's harmless around Chihiro is because Chihiro is pure of intention and spirit, being one of the few legitimately selfless individuals in the film.

A lot of people also interpret No-Face as a representation of western capitalism, which a couple people posted. While western consumerism is a big part of spirited away, No-Face highlights the fact that traditional Japanese culture can be just as greedy and shitty as that of the west.

A lot of the movie is about polluting elements which corrupt the bathhouse and the reactionary need of its inhabitants to "cleanse" it. No-Face isn't a polluting element, he just reveals that the bath house was dirty and corrupt from the beginning.

Damn last time I've seen spirited away was more than 10 years ago.
>>
>>138817829
>Tsundere, yandere doesn't exist in the real world
They're just simplifications of real female archetypes, you probably didn't talk with many females with you never met one with a behavior similar to a tsundere. Like in any work of fiction, things are dramatized and exaggerated for the sake of entertainment in anime, but they still inspired by real life situations and still convey real life messages.

I'd argue that females in anime are much less dramatized and unrealistic than how they are generally portrayed in western media.
>>
>>138817829
>they don't have messages

Yes they do. Even video games have messages, just look at the Metal Gear series.

>Tsundere, yandere, shitdere etc is not how people

Yeah, because shy and crazy people don't exist. What kind of world are you living in?
>>
>>138817829
>They not. And it has nothing to do with:
That's just dumb anon. Mangakas don't live in a separate realm from us, they form their character through experiences with both the environment and other people, just like everyone else in the world. Even the biggest shut-in has influences from the real world because he talked with other people, on the internet or real life, read books written by other people, or watched works done by other people. If you're a human being, you literally cannot escape from the influence of society and that will obviously reflect on what you say/write.

Overdramatized and overexaggerated. To the point they are no longer resemble human beings.
>>138818028

Is shit when it comes to plot. Along with many others japanese games.
>Yeah, because shy and crazy people don't exist
Point is, they have nothing but their shyness and craziness. Overexaggerated main feature with everything else oversimplified or completely erased.
>>
>>138818238
P.S. You almost can say that they have only two dimensions.
>>
>>138818238
>To the point they are no longer resemble human beings.
Again, that isn't actually true, stop parroting stuff.

>Point is, they have nothing but their shyness and craziness
They do have other things, what kind of anime are you even watching?Even the shittest series will give some kind of background, arc or at least superficial depth to the character so that they can be more relatable to the audience. Unless you're talking about side characters who barely show up.

Characters in Miyazaki movies aren't any more complex or deep than in many other anime out there. His films are good, but people like you putting them on a pedestal really need to have a reality check.
>>
>>138818238
>ignores his point

Don't bother, he thinks that repeating the Miyazaki meme makes him intelligent and cool.
>>
>>138816879
>He frequently covers war, capitalism, the environment, and other left-wing topics.

The amusing thing is that leftism is the cultural enabler of the worst kind of capitalism.

Destroy the traditions, the emptiness left behind is filled with consumerism. Just look at fucking Christmas, once a religious festivity of the christians, now just a multiculti feel-good excuse to buy shit.
>>
>>138818364
>Even the shittest series will give some kind of background, arc or at least superficial depth to the character
And then will completely forget about all this and make them do whatever plot requires them to. Also:
>some kind of background
Quarter of an episode most of the time.
>Characters in Miyazaki movies aren't any more complex
It's true.
>putting them on a pedestal
I don't.
>>138818386

Spirited Away was about the teen prostitution issue in Japan. I stole all of this:

>Chihiro's parents eat the food of the spirit, similar to how many prostitutes are forced into it by trying to pay off debts or to support family due to some thoughtless actions.
>Chihiro's name is taken from her, showing both how prostitution takes away your identity and self-worth and how many prostitutes go under a pseudonym. What's more, her new name is a number, another show of loss of identity and a possible reference to how much she costs.
>In the past, bath houses were known to double as brothels. In the Japanese version of the movie, Chihiro is refered to as a Yuna, which were girl who specifically serviced men both in washing and sexually.
>Almost every patron that we see is male/ambiguous, while most of the workers are female, and the few male workers are more administrative than anything.
>Yubaba herself looks a good deal like a Victorian brothel Madame.
>Haku is either a fellow prostitute under debt for Yubaba, or he's also a pimp but draws the line at child prostitution. It's especially personal since he and Chihiro have a history.
>No-Face is another patron, a poor one known for his violent tendancies. But once he has money, the greedy brothel welcomes him. The idea (wrong or not) that he could do anything he wanted in the bath house as long as he paid enough makes him go power-mad in the bath house. But no matter what the workers try to do to please him, all he wants is to pay the little girl who's caught his eye.
>Chihiro eventually runs away with the promise that she'll find a way to save both her old friend Haku and her parents. Yubaba reacts very angrily to this
>The fact that the creators said themselves that they were inspired by the underground sex work business. Quote from Miyazaki: "I think the most appropriate way to symbolize the modern world is the sex industry. Hasn't Japanese society become like the sex industry?"

You're right about that, but it look like Miyazaki himself is worried about Japan getting alll the vices from the West.

And he's probably right about that, the influence Hollywood has is enormous.
