I sincerely find that NNB is one of the funniest and most endearing works I've ever come across. I don't get the same feeling from the manga (having only read the parts that have been licensed in English), but there's something there, that when combined with the anime-original aspects, really clicked on all cylinders for me.
The lush and painfully realistic setting of slowly-dying rural Japan; the endlessly layered wordplay and surreal humour of Ren-chon and company; the utopian ideal of children with no concept of excluding the new kid: it all comes together to create a beauty and depth that are incredibly special.
If I'm delusional, I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't share my delusion.
