As I explained it earlier, over the last decade the Tenchi Muyo franchise became a series of novels. So now the novels are canon and the anime is the derivative work. It's the best thing since the first OVAs.
After the first episode, it's mostly school and harem shenanigans, and after that the plot kicks in and you get the robot fights you were promised.
And if you think Kenshi is a Gary Stu, look at it this way- he was trained to be that fucking good at everything, and he gets the piloting skills from his mother.

Bad mistake. It is proof that Kajisima still writes good stories and why we still have hope of a good new series of OVAs. Isekai is the reason we still care about more Tenchi Muyo.
