Well, there are about 30 shows that come out every season. 4 seasons make for 120 shows per year. 10 years in a decade to make 1200 shows. Starting in 1980 and extending to 2020 is a total of 4800 individual shows.
I excluded 1950-1970 because the amount of anime per season was typically less than 30, and lumped them all theoretically into the 5 years of 2016-2020.
100 anime is... not all that much if expressed in terms of enthusiast.
It's like saying you are a wine enthusiast after tasting only a dozen types of white wine all from the same vineyard. You need to sample different varieties.
I would say that you must sample from all genres and watch all significant pieces in order to understand anime as an enthusiast.
It is less an issue of quantity and more of quality in selection.
My 4800 anime is a low estimate, by the way.

i once watched an animated project from the university of osaka, the video was about 26 min long and it was hosted in niconico.
the video dated from 1995 so the wuality was really bad, the problem came when i realized what the problem was, the plot of the animation was an appeal to enjo kousai at early ages.

Okubyou na Venus. It's an OVA that's four music videos that act as the story for a rising singer's success. Not subbed, only ever found it in shit quality on YouTube. That's just one of them though, there's dozens of completely forgotten OVAs out there.

Pre-1960s anime is easy to tick off, just watch Legend of the White Snake (Hakujaden). It's not particularly great, but if you're into the history and timeline of anime, it's probably one you shouldn't pass up on, along with any of those old wartime cartoons.
Funny to see previously dubbed/licensed and well-received anime near the bottom on the OP, like Crest of the Stars. Same with Robot Carnival and Angel's Egg, to a degree. They're not necessarily obscure if you ever watch 80s stuff, but it's probably more a matter if the viewer liked or responded well to them.

tfw I began anime with deep tier 4 stuff (Girls und Panzer, Porco Rosso, Sky Crawlers) and then watched random stuff from all over the chart, from Death Note and Madoka Magica to Strike Witches and Black Lagoon
tl;dr there's a slight smell of bullshit in there. Plus, I wouldn't have ranked Madoka Magica as entry anime while most Miyazaki films are deeper ; these ones pop up quite often on mainstream TV channels. PMMM (or Mirai Nikki, or even fucking SAO) don't.
