This. When they suddenly start spouting western internet memes you're suddenly acutely aware of the localisation. You know this isn't what they're saying, and it takes you out of show. Suddenly you're second guessing everything in the translation becuase you don't know where else they're fucking around unfaithfully with it.
I think when watching a show, especially subbed, people are prepared to have things that are done are said that are foreign to them or they don't understand, and trying super hard to make something else fit instead of translating more faithfully is far less engaging for the end viewer.

I agree but professional translators will try to convey an idea if it can't work in a cultural context. Watch Western movies with Japanese subs and you'll kind of get that; some things are straight untranslatable without losing either dialogue or the audience themselves.
