This is one of my late night as-I-try-to-sleep theories for Osomatsu-san, so read at your own risk.The Osomatsu we know in - san (here on refered as Red) is not the same Osomatsu in -kun, "Osomatsu" of that time is -san's current Choro (Green). When they were a hivemind Oso and Choro took turns being "Osomatsu" just to mess with everyone.
When they entered middle school, Green's grades were shit as ever and he started having esteem issues as the oldest that's meant to lead the others. Red saw this and said he would be "Osomatsu" from then on and be held responsible until Green was ready to be the lead again. This is why Red is a shit role model and holds the others back, he's waiting for Green to lead them out of the Matsuno shit hole.
But then Green suffered more mental issues and started believing he really was Choromatsu, betraying Red, hence, why they're not as close anymore. Red in ep 2 mentioned identity issues but he was actually talking about Green.
Although Green believes he's the third son, there's something nagging him to be the responsible one and "try" to get a job.
