How much value do you put into visual direction?
Hey I've seen this thread before.
Although the last successful one used a much better image for the OP.
For me it's one of the most important things in an anime.
Look at all the hype for Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, which as far as we know is Attack on Titan with trains.
If the anime has a good visual direction, good pacing, and a decent storytelling, people love it. I know I do.

Plot is all that matters, I don't even watch anime anymore, I just read wikipedia's plot summaries and now I'm finishing twenty anime an hour

Visual direction is more important than story for sure. After all most anime have very derivative and cliched plots, so execution is more important than content. Good visual style is important to pulling off a story well, but voice acting and OST also help with the execution. So my ranking would probably be:
1st Tier Importance
>Art Direction
>Voice Acting
>OST
2nd Tier Importance
>Character Design
>Animation
>Sound Direction
>Writing (Dialogue)
3rd Tier Importance
>Writing (Plot, story)
>Other Art Assets (i.e. background designs)
Visual direction is by far the most important aspect for me. I don't care if the story is shit if the visuals are pretty enough.

If you actually did enjoy good literature you'd find anime pretty much impossible to enjoy. So my guess is you just read trashy genre fiction and have similar taste in anime (i.e. pulpy serial fiction stories).

If you enjoy garbage like game of thrones or lord of the rings you probably enjoy trash like hyouka because it's "pretty"
I wish there were more good film directors working right now. Who do we have? Hara and Katabuchi, maybe now Yamada is focusing on features. Yuasa getting back into it. I dunno, it just feels like there haven't been many really great feature length movies lately. Has anyone seen Harmony yet? It's unsubbed but looks promising?

And SnK doesn't get anyone hyped, right? Hell, even the visual appeal of Kabaneri is mostly just because of Mikimoto designs.
Visual direction is a part of the storytelling process and thus of the writing. The story is told through both the texts and the way the scenes are framed.

Well, half of a story is the medium/setting, so isn't making sure the visuals match the story you are telling incredibly important? A brilliant cinematographer can't save a shit script, and a brilliant script can't do shit with horrible cinematography.

You realize some of the most important parts of books and stories in general lies in how the author builds their world? The scenery and descriptions in The Great Gastby, for instance, are highly important for creating the world in which the story and characters are built. Things that make a story "great" lie in every aspect and how the author uses it.
