A lot of classic Disney movies are still great even as an adult. Even some generic shounen anime like Kenshin, YYH, HxH, HnK are still great. Growing up doesn't mean objectively good things become bad. Growing up means you become smart enough to acknowledge flaws, not that the shows magically become bad. Pokemon was never good, it was just watchable, and decently entertaining for kids who were new to the franchise and had little else to watch, e.g. us.
And even then that only applies to the 1st season, after that it quickly devolved into never-ending shit which was so fucking horrible it made the unremarkable 1st season look good in comparison.
If you want to see a really good kid's anime that was made around the same time as Pokemon Season 1, watch GaoGaiGar. It has actual animation too which is a plus.

I didnt even start watching the pokemon anime until I was 18 and I can tell you that OS is pretty damn trash. I went through over 900 episodes of the stuff and can say that in my opinion, the series didnt start picking up until the Advance series, went up in quality from there with the DP saga, completely dropped the ball back to OS levels of trash with BW, then returned to form with XY.

This would be far more effective if they let the original series end after Kanto like it was originally planned to instead of extending the series and repeatedly resetting the MC's character development that was supposed to be valued over simply battling other trainers and catching new Pokemon. Extending the series ended up contradicting their own moral message.
We could have had something like Digimon with several standalone seasons involving a different creative team each time with their own take on the Pokemon concept.

I'm watching through the anime at the moment, first time since i was a chld watching it on cheeseTV. It's pretty terrible. The only good episodes so far are the league eps when there is half decent battling going on. every other episode is them walking and getting in a right with team rocket and they beat them, rinse repeat. Even a lot of the gym battle are shitty where ash is either winning or losing and the battle gets interrupted by team rocket (again) and they beat them and the gym leader gives him a badge for being cool.
I'm 4 seasons into this junk and i doubt i'll get season 5. It was good as a kid because we didnt see the same plot over and over and over. Now we're older and can see shitty plot a mile away. I swear if ash doesnt get to the league at the end of season 4 im going to kill someone.

There is hardly ever any payoff with character arcs and very rarely any actual tension in the show because it's aimed at short attention spans. Team rocket get pikachu? XY is my last hope of ash ever winning the league, anime has done a bunch of things they usually dont do in regards to making ash a special snowflake protagonist, his team has dragons in it, and all his pokemon (except pika) are fully evolved for once, and most of them are pretty decent mons in general, in this arc he has a fucking legendary travelling with his group and ash and co. may actually have relevance to the evil team plotline in a meaningful way rather than just sorta being there and not really doing anything of note as is the case in the previous seasons.
