Why did people hate the space arc?
I literally thought it was some meme until people I trust more than /a/ started saying the same thing. I always thought the first half was kinda boring and disjointed in comparison.

I always tought that Viral should had gone with the blonde with big tits to make a Vegeta reference or some shit like that. I reckon his kid would had been pretty cool looking. Part 2 battles and soundtrack where super boring, and the only remarkable one was the battle of planets but even then I felt apathy and more like an obligation to watch it. Also chalk guy was hilariously pathetic and ridiculous.
This is why I hate timeskips without proper planing, fuck DBZ did it and it worked because Tori tought on the cool factor like "it would be cool if this guys had a kid because the kid would be like this and that and the interactions would be fun etc...

I said it back when the show was airing, and, having rewatched, I still say it now: episodes one through eight of TTGL are about as good as super robot anime gets. Everything afterwards is just Gainax going through the motions because they've got nineteen more episodes to fill.
I liked it. Once they jumped the shark and just ran it into the ground it just felt gratifying to watch. I was entertained.

Part 2 was easily what killed the show for me until the middle of the space battle. Yeah, Part 1 did peter down after episode 8 and ended up being a bunch of typical long-term powerup shit, but Part 1 really capitalized on seeing a story through to the end in a set amount of time. TTGL Part 1 made me think that if your average anime season was 15 episodes instead of 12, it would be much easier to tell a story since it would allow for more "flushing out" and actually following the Hero's Journey system perfectly despite being in parody. 3 extra episodes really helps out more than most people would think.
What was cool about Part 2 was that it toyed with character longevity: even our matured heroes can't last forever, so what happens then? That was cool for a whopping 10 minutes until veteran characters actually started dying one by one. Other than that and the battle, Part 2 is a mess of "muh emotions" that doesn't really do a great job of sticking to parody or homage, and that's still a fair amount of episodes to go through before you really hit the meat & potatos.
I will say that despite all criticism, it still deserves a lot of the praise it gets since it fucking RESONATED here for years after it initially aired, even after the internet explosion the year after. The 10 year anniversary of TTGL is upon us in a year and 16 days. That might be an interesting day.

not really. It certainly had a big fanbase, even here on /a/, but ever since like episode 2 or 3 the "Trigger will save anime" meme has changed to "Anime is ruined", with a lot of people only staying on the ride in the hopes it gets better.
It was different with Gurren Laganns space arc, there was never doubt(aside for the moments i mentioned)
The only major problem I had with TTGL (which ruined it for me) was that there wasn't a single good character in the show outside of minor ones like Viral and Kittan. The entire cast is just there to support Simon as he practically solos the universe itself.
It took the gattai part of Getter Robo, but really failed to make the other pilots just as strong as Simon and use teamwork to bring down the final boss.
