It comes out of nowhere and is badly written to force the Airi ending, unlike most of what came before it.

In the beginning he said that it takes you back just long enough to save the person. But he really really didn't need to save Kayo to save his mom. He arrived seconds too late, so he could have stopped it if he just left a minute or 2 earlier.
