But above all, it's the direction and pacing. It's so incredibly sharp. There is no unnecessary scene, no unneccessary line. All the camera angles and lightning are incredible. It's simply perfection. The only anime coming close to what Madoka did on those two aspects is Perfect Blue, and it was my previous favourite.

Everything we believed in was shattered, reestablished as truth, shattered again, another out-of-nowhere connection pulled out as plottwist, shattered.

Not the same guy but I really think that Arakawa is a genuinely good mangaka. Even if FMA is not the best of her works I think is a pretty solid shonen and everyone that likes manga/anime should give it a try.
That being said, like with many popular things, it tends to have a very retarded and obnoxious fanbase and I genuinely believe that is the only problem it has a series and why so many anons don't like it that much.
I give it a 8.8/10. It isn't a masterpiece but it is good.
K-On! just works for me on every level, I dunno, I seriously doubt I'll ever enjoy something so much again.

you're correct that an artform can never truly be perfect, but I don't believe something has to be truly perfect to be a 10/10. However, I don't think anything is objectively a 10/10 either. Something crosses into the 8/10 realm and that last point or 2 is purely how well it resonates with you.

Rose of Versailles. Can't even explain why considering that French Revolution never really interested me in school. I suppose that's just the power of Dezaki direction and animation. It certainly has the best female MC to ever be an any anime at the very least.

I actually didn't really like Oscar. She wasn't particularly interesting to me until the end. Wish there had been more focus on her femininity and all that jazz, rather than her just being this icon of justice for most of the show. My pick for best female main character would be Utena.

Call me pleb, call me a faggot, but Mirai Niki was 10/10 for me. I love how autistic the show is for the first 20~ episodes, then once the MC stops being a bitch and starts doing cool shit, it was one of the most pleasing things to watch.

I've rewatched the show a few times and still enjoyed it, liked some parts better than others in retrospect, so "trusting memories" seems shortsighted.
That said, I'd argue Code Geass as a whole had more virtues than flaws. But it isn't 10/10 since R2 did stumble a lot, admittedly. Yet while there are certainly a lot of over-the-top events, they aren't necessarily all "asspulls" in the first place nor is it "wrong" to find them entertaining either.
