It feels weird to gush over this show for doing basic things right, but one of the scenes I loved was when the dullahan came back the second time and the MC finds out that Megumin and Aqua were still blowing up the castle. Which is funny enough as a gag, but also they have like motivations and activities that don't revolve around the MC almost like a real story should have.

The fact that the female characters actually have passions and interests is one of the best things about the characters of this show. It's almost appalling that something like that is so novel, but it is because so few authors seem to get that right. It doesn't help that most 'serious' stories, eschew that direction of character development entirely in favour of a series of cardboard cutouts following a single focal protagonist along a railroad track of narrative.
I think part of Konosuba's appeal is just how diverse the cast of characters is for something that's actually so character driven. Any one of them could steal the show, but instead every one of them works together on-screen to create something special. It's genuinely impressive.

This is something I really like in Konosuba. Even if you take the most shallow and popular character, Megumin, she is in fact defined by her personal passion and goal. And her goal has nothing to do with MC's dick, unlike 99% of LN adaptations. She just wants explosions.
And the sad thing is, "I love explosions!" is far deeper and more genuine than what anime girls typically get.This is such a rare thing it honestly dumbfounded me when I thought about it.

It's not even like Konosuba is amazing for doing this, but every other story in this vein is just awful about everyone being a satellite character or chasing penis or both.
And to be honest, I don't even have a problem with chasing penis. I'm fine with it. The real problem is when you have an otherwise likeable character whose motivation is chasing penis because it means they don't get to do anything cool outside the gravitational pull of MC density and their character more than likely won't go anywhere.

Satellite characters just tend to suck. Any character that isn't the main character *(or, in some cases, the antagonist) just tend to suck. They don't get to have agency, or personality, or interests, or passions. They just get to be a faceless, named piece in a social structure that the main character is situated within. They serve a narrative function, offer a gimmick, or a joke's punchline and that's it. Absolutely nothing else.
I think part of the beauty of konosuba's elegantly simple writing is that the humour emerges as a sort of natural consequence of the many different and differently motivated characters pulling in different directions. It's a natural-seeming consequence of interaction, conflict and communication between characters rather than just this monomythic golden path that the protagonist follows because it's their function as the protagonist to follow it.
Harems have the problem of being all about the MC. More than that, being all about the MC when the MC is the absolute least interesting character. But, I think, the bizarre thing is that this is a flaw shared by like 95% of contemporary western writing as well. Nobody seems to know how to write a secondary character that isn't just an echo of an impression of a caricature of a human being seen projected through elaborate deconstructive shadow-puppetry into the back of the protagonist-and-exclusive-perspective-character's mind while the MC tumbles foreward, agency-less, through a series of dramatic events that illustrate some agenda or opinion the author learned to parrot by completing their graduate degree in humanities at UofT.
There's an absolute pandemic of bad character writing in the world which has lowered my standards to such an extent that the anime adaptation of a children's comedy book blows my fucking mind. Goddamn.

Koizumi is almost a character. The problem is that his role in the story is like mechanical and he sets things up in the background and the main thing he does is spout exposition. This is what I really loved about Muv-Luv Alternative. Aside from the main harem of girls interested in the plain MC, age added the girls from two other titles as mentors and sempais. With them, they brought all their histories and interests and were able to have novel interactions with the original Muv-Luv cast. My favorite scene, of course, si when Chewie asks dense MC Takeru for advise on how to seduce another dumb MC, and he actually gives good advise. It's great.

women writers sucking and being unfunny is mostly a western thing. japan has one of the longest and strongest cultural history in the world of female writers. With most of their best writers throughout history being women.
You can tell konosuba is written by a woman because
1) the MC has a personality, and isn't a faceless self insert
2) the girls have characters and goals that exist independent of the MC's dick
3) the author isn't afraid to make cute girls into unlikable bitches
4) there aren't any tsunderes anywhere in this story, except perhaps for the MC Kazuma, who amusingly enough is the only character accused of being a tsundere in the story (by aqua btw).
