Dragon Ball manga purists are pathetic. The story is only watchable because the GOAT voice cast made the dialogue enjoyable. Reading the dialogue in the manga made me feel dumber.

DB dub is one of the few alright dubs.
There's no real issue with it as far as I can tell.
DBZ dub is enjoyable too but it definitely takes some liberties with the dialogue here and there that might rub you the wrong way, so be aware of that before going in. Generally, it smooths itself out by the end of the Cell arc though and Buu is overall pretty great.

The only thing I like in the DB dub is Pilaf. Everything else felt wrong, specially Piccolo (I was okay with Roshi and Goku too though).
DBZ dub is only watchable in the Buu saga, like you said. The Freeza saga is a disaster all the way through except for Recoome.

Furukawa is the best thing in the japanese cast and makes any other dub Piccolo sound like a joke, even the dubs I'm a fan of.
During DB Piccolo sounds cold and evil but immature, like a younger version of his King Piccolo. In Z he gets more serious as the shows goes along and he grows older. "When asked if Takeshi Aono's work as Piccolo Daimao influenced his portrayal of Piccolo, Furukawa replied that because Piccolo Daimao was impulsive, he initially played his own role as an energetic person around eighteen-years-old and later imagined him as close to thirty-years old in Dragon Ball Z."
Horikawa as Vegeta is also good and sounds distant and calculating except for when angry (the other half of time, you know Vegeta). His screams are amazing.

Same deal as you OP. I stopped watching after the Vegeta fight because I had seen the fucking Frieza arc through parodies and bits of it on TV so many times that I didn't even want to bother. I thought about skipping ahead to the androids and cell but I lost my steam by then.

Dragon Ball has asspulls, but there's so many of them that they're not really asspulls. It's just how the world works. At its core, Dragon Ball is a serious story in a gag universe. By the end of it you get stuff like "Hey guys, I learned a magical dance from alien ghosts that lets two people fuse and become a million times stronger" and you don't even blink because that's just how Dragon Ball is.
