It's both really easy to kill a person, but at the same time very difficult.
Most likely the kid is just really lucky. If the maniac had been more methodical and purposeful (rather than just randomly stamping) the kid would have been dead, no matter how weak the assailant was (the weight of an adult pushing down, not even stamping, could kill a child if put on the wrong spot)
