Yu Yu Hakusho has the single best tournament arc ever created. In my opinion, it is better than Hunter x Hunter up till and after the tournament arc is done.
After that, HxH puts it dead in the dirt.

The only thing HxH doesn't do netter than YYH imo is that the main character group lacks the dynamic personalities and charisma of Team Urasmeshi. But really other than that they're YYH cast 2.0 except with more development outside of Leorio. Everything else HxH has over YYH.

HxH characters have more depth and nuance to their relationship than YYH characters. Gon and Killua aren't the fun, brotastic sort of pair people love, but they've got an emotionally charged, flawed relationship that develops throughout the series. Kurapika's character arc hasn't fully begun yet but the way he isolates himself from the others is another flaw that will lead to some development.
Leorio would fit in with YYH cast and I bet everyone who loves him also loves Kurabawa, but no surprise he's the most shallow and least developed of the four.

The world in YYH is poorly constructed
The world in HxH is incredibly well constructed
Basically Togashi made HxH with the mindset of making a battle shounen the way he wanted while he struggled with YYH which started out as a gag comedy and then a battle shounen and then whatever the hell it was during the Sensui arc as a whole HxH is just more consistently good while YYH starts off poorly gets way better than turns to shit again.

If you take your time reading the older works all of Jump titles are Togashi's recycled ideas, with but different themes.
YYH is based off on his one-shots with increasingly more mature themes; Togashi was "young" at the time and started to develop his taste on different subjects (most prominently sexuality ambiguity, xenophobia and violence/gore like in the 80's manga/anime at the time)
HxH is obviously a shonen take on Level E + YHH+ his older works+DBZ+JJBA:
Exam + Sky Arena -> YYH tournaments
Greed Island -> Power Rangers arcs
Ant Saga -> Intersexuality arc + "Demon world politics"
GR saga is new IIRC.
He really really likes to recycle themes/settings and twist them in fresh new ways.-
Am I the only one who really dislikes both of these shows, Hell I didn't even think the dark tournament arc was anything special. If I have to watch a long running shounen series I'd rather rewatch zeta gundam or something

I never really liked the ant arc it became less about nen and more about powerlevels. Sure it did have its moments but the king and the royal guard were too over powered. Hopefully the upcoming prince free for all on the boat will bring back nen fights.
Also i never really liked Gon as the mc hopefully his chapter is done and its now Ging.
