Look at the ratings, DVD/Blu-ray sales, and timeslot of where anime shows air, it's all declining. Anime is becoming popular among normalfags, but they would never obsess over it like many from /a/ do. Anime is still very much geared towards japanese otaku, and so only a handful of shows each year will ever show up on thier radar, as much of it might still be considered creepy or wierd. That point is probably the main reason anime isn't watched by everyone in the same way that video games or cartoons are now played and watched by many normalfags, and as long as Japan keeps pandering to otaku who are willing to spend money on the newest figure or daki, anime will take a longer time to become a common hobby with normalfags.

Anime is still niche, it's just not obscure anymore. The vast majority of anime is still inaccessible to normalfags, but entry level titles have unprecedented exposure so the mainstream is more aware of anime now than at any point in the past.
So if you imagine anime as a big lake, the middle of the lake is still not very crowded, but the shores are getting increasingly packed with tourists.
