I think having Black Label going on, and that ending first, which pretty much was the ending for the entire series, might have taken the air out of what was left of the main story, since he set himself up with a time limit in their universe for the main story to end and for Black Label to pick up, and he also put the finish on any relationship drama or tension that might be built for the main story, since it's official they end up together in the end.
