The biggest problem with LoGH is that everything goes Reinhard's way. Even Kircheis biting it helped turn him from a selfish asshole into someone more merciful and patient.
It would've been much more interesting if Kircheis had lived and eventually led a coup against Reinhard after the latter turned into too much of a Rudolph. Or you could even have Reinhard dying before Reuntal's rebellion and Reuntal amassing power for himself and trying to court Annerose to produce a legitimate heir.
There's just so much potential that was squashed to make Reinhard's short reign go as smoothly as possible.

Every charcter in Lotgh is either extremely competent and honorable or a sleazy incompetent piece of shit. I mean sure there were people like Reunthal and Oberstein but even they had more tragic romanticized flaws than human ones.

Just because his reign is ultimately secured doesn't mean that things always went his way.
They didn't. He just made the best of what happened.

No that's actually one of the interesting points of the show, Reinhard is a warlord who wants to stroke his ego through battle, and while he does win every battle, he never defeats Yang and thus his ego is consistently hurt. Despite the fact that Reinhard seizes the universe, achieving his goal, he's not very happy. Kircheis is gone, his sister won't see him, there's no more battles for the time being and he still wants that one chance to repair his ego.
Kircheis would have been able to keep Reinhard sensible, hell even without him Reinhard didn't go full Rudolf, so i found your scenario difficult to believe. Also Kircheis isn't that interesting of a character.
Reuenthal is just like Reinhard except he has no goal. Reinhard at least wanted to seize the empire to free his sister, that's a goal with motivation. Reuenthal doesn't actually want to deal with the consequences of beating Reinhard, he just want's to fight (among other things).

If i recall correctly, Yang was just in charge of his fleet in that battle, and that battle was the huge Alliance invasion, so there was a lot of fleets there. The only time Kircheis had contact with Yang in that battle was when he had him outnumbered 3-1 and Yang was able to withdraw without a hitch
