The fault lies with your programming then. You're still young, though, so you still have time to fix it.
>>
>>138591854
SRS shows you cards right before you forget them. Therefore, reviewing ahead is reviewing cards too early, which therefore increases your chance of remembering them and thereby decreases the effectiveness of SRS. It's not a *huge* fuckup but it's not something you want to do because it doesn't actually help you, whereas reviewing forgotten cards is targeting all your weak points and leaving the SRS algorithm largely untouched (since you're reviewing cards on 1-3 day intervals anyway).

If I have a custom study deck set to review all forgotten per day, will it automatically populate itself, or will I need to manually recreate it each day?

The anki trap isn't just deciding to never read, or just focusing all efforts onto anki. Rather, the anki trap tends to be the tendency to do pittance amounts of reading alongside anki, without realizing how insignificant that reading is. For example, slowing going through manga at a pace of a couple pages a day, or opening a VN but leaving it in the background without ever really sitting down and going through it, that kind of thing. The daily laziness that adds up to months passed with practically nothing to show for it... except anki.

>>
How hard would it be to get the dialogue from a VN, have a program automatically parse all words from it, add info from a dictionary and input them into anki cards in the order of appearance?

I would imagine something like this would be useful for creating a vocab deck of whatever you are planning on reading so you could learn all the words before actually reading
>>
>>138594526
Are you saying you spend days reading 2 pages of manga? Or is this some fictional anki trap you've invented?
>>
>>138594755
時 i'm assuming? But yeah, it sucks. Struggled to even read 帽子 because of my inferior gaijin pixel recognition.
>>
>>138594866
You're probably better off waiting until you know all the words in the japanese language before you attempt to read anything.
>>
>>138594755
時?
>>
>>138594526

When you're at the stage when the only reason you can't read fluently is you don't have enough vocabulary, then it doesn't matter how much you read really.
>>
>>138594883
It's just a bizarre form of confirmation bias to mend some inner struggle or shortcoming. It's not uncommon in these threads.
>>
>>138594943
Rather, it especially matters how much you read, because every scrap of exposure is jam-packed with unknown information that makes reading incredibly efficient study.
>>138594969

No.
>>
>>138594526

Pretty easy, depending on the VN engine.
>>
>>138594929
This. "Read more" is a meme. Don't believe anything you hear from anyone but me and this anon. Do not attempt reading until you're fluent.

>>
Why is the advice only to read and not to listen to any spoken Japanese?
>>
When you use Anki real time import while reading a VN and you get a word that has no audio, what do you do ?
Especially if the character who used the word doesn't have a VA.
>>
>>138595463
Reading is easier to texthook. Podcast and radio talks have no subtitles.
>>
>>138594265
Maybe you shouldn't cut the definition.
>>
>>138594606
What you'll want to do is to just emulate it and zoom the fuck in. Pretty sure you can get text hookers to work with emulators as well.
>>
>>138595347
I asked that question in order to clarify something written in DOJG. Telling me to just read it when you clearly do not know the answer on your own is not helpful.

At any rate, DOJG provides translations solely in the form of "I wish I had..." though after reading other sources it's clear that either "I wish I had..." or "(I) should have..." can work as the intended meaning. So simply going along with DOJG would have provided an incomplete understanding.

So, please don't give instructions like that unless you know fully that DOJG is completely correct, because otherwise you're just filling the thread with bad advice.
>>
>>138595517
What? "Ornamental" is supposedly core's definition for the word.
>>
>>138595463
You can watch TV shows or movies, so long as they have Japanese subtitles. You want to be associating the pronunciation and sound of the characters with the shape of the characters. When you read you should sound out as you read to help build that association.
Just listening to people speak won't help you learn the language, why do you think we stress such an importance on learning to write kana first?
>>
>>138595598
Okay I will be helpful now.

> この本を読めばよかった
>I wish I had read that book

> この本を読むべきだった / この本を読んだほうがよかった
> "I should have read that book"

>Does よかった always indicate a personal preference about something?
No.

You sure are really rude and acting like an ass. I hope I won't ever have to answer your questions ever again in the future even if by accident, anon. Goodluck with your study.
>>
>>138595762
>When you read you should sound out as you read
I take it you mean 'speak out loud' instead of 'sound out'?
>>
Would 20 be a good pace to go through the DOJG deck? I already know most of the basic one so I'll just delete those that I already know well. I'm wondering if it's not too fast/slow, since those aren't just words but grammar explanation too. I'm normally doing 50 cards a day for vocabulary but I don't think I could do the same for grammar. How many new cards do you guys do each day for the DOJG deck?

don't worry, they will teach you how to swim, how to float, etc.

assuming you make it through, they will send you to a school and then send you on your way to your first duty station.

Two notes to help you get to glorious nippon.
DO NOT sub vol. They will spring this on you a few days in. There are NO submarine bases in Japan. If you go sub you will vastly increase the number of ships you can be stationed on that are not in Japan.

MAKE SURE that you elect to pay into GI Bill. (they take some money your paycheck for a year or something like that). The value of this cannot be understated -- once you get out, you will be able to go to any college in america you can get into, essentially for FREE, as they will pay all housing, food, books, and tuition for 36 months. (This means if you don't make it to glorious nippon in the navy, you'll still be able to go to college when you get out and do a foreign study (year abroad type stuff) to make it anyways. And it'll be a better experience anyway since you won't be a grunt in the Navy.)

I was an Electrician's Mate in the nuclear field (a "nuke", as you'll hear).

They'll give you this form where you indicate what duty stations you prefer. Not sure how much attention they actually pay to that though. There's like 25 or so ships stationed there right now, I think, spread between three bases. Sasebo, Okinawa, and Yokosuka. Good luck.

Fwiw I had some acquaintances get stationed in japan for first orders so it's possible.

Well I took a Japanese class last semester and it really kind of put a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know what I expected but it was filled with the tumblr girls that find Anime empowering and casual obnoxious weebs. I kind of went on a hiatus from the /jp/ side of myself and started learning Spanish instead of Japanese for about 6 months now. I stopped finding Asians attractive and everything. However, I'm not sure what's happening but I feel like it's coming back to me. I don't know why. I feel yellow fever again, I want to go to Japan again, I have the urge to learn the language again. I don't care to watch Anime or anything though so it's not a weeb feeling. Have you guys experienced this? It's kind of odd to me as I thought it was just a phase that I was able to grow out of.
>>
>>138599937
Not exactly this but I first wanted to learn Japanese in 2010. I tried for three months but I soon gave up as soon as I stopped reading manga and watching anime. I started doing that again in 2015 and in the summer, I started learning Japanese again. (I sticked to it, ever since.)
>>
>>138599937
Why would you learn Spanish?
>>
>>138600199
It's relatively easy to learn so I thought about giving it a shot

None of that matters, become a translator and English tutor. The point in getting a job in Japan is that you can get a piss easy job because you're a fluent English/Japanese speaker.
Trust me, you don't want to be programming or doing any of that desk work. They'll overwork you for shit pay and you'll have no time to actually live. If you want a shit job, get one in the west where you might actually get reasonable hours.

Anything else on the card is for clearing up ambiguity or anything else - they should be ignored most of the time.

You should ideally be making your own deck, as premade ones tend to be full of absolute shit that is counter productive.

Cards should be as simple as possible, and omit anything that's uncommon usage - that can come later.

It's hard to recognize novels because you'll struggle with the good ones too much to enjoy them, you know? Novels are pure text so if you're bad at reading you're going to have a bad time. So it's tempting to recommend mediocre novels like ドラゴンキラーあります or 無職転生.

Not comparable.

I can't think of a noun in English that has two significantly different pronunciations and meanings, yet is written the same way.

Specifically a noun, because verbs and adjectives are extremely obvious almost all of the time.

>>
>>138604302

Read as a verb is obvious from the tense. As a noun, it is obvious from the sentence structure.

Those others are all pronounced the same in all contexts.

Only historically.

Many cultures had far more abstract ways of perceiving colour.

I've heard some countries became acutely aware of the difference between green, teal, and blue, whereas the anglosphere considers only green and blue to be distinct, with teal being called either.
