Considering these bigger anime nations than perhaps America, how are the dubs in these countries? Better than english ones.
>>
French dubs are mostly shit except FMA 2003, KLK and GTO, but our old openings are great.
>>
For spanish there are alot of different ones, but Catalan is probably the best I think,
>>
>>138577682
Yup. French dubs basically suck, there are some exceptions tho. Still better than english ones imo. At least some French VA can act.

Who cares? That era is over now.

Osomatsu-kun in Spanish is awesome though

Bigger? In what way? It's pretty much murrica that built up most (fan)sub releases by core staff and resources, even Crunchyshit is murrican. I think murricans were even hiring Japanese animators before the "boom". Only yurop country that has any real often spoke of "relevancy" is baguette.

Italy here

They used to be pretty decent in the 90s. Now I don't really watch TV anymore, but wheneve I stumble upon something by chance SWEET JEESUS is it horrid, it's like they're not even trying.

Pastaman reporting.
Dubs are almost always good, some very good, others decent, a few mediocre.
The biggest problem our dubs had is censorship, but VAs tend to do their job properly.
Obviously I wouldn't say any dub is better than the japanese one, some are probably on par.
Almost every weeb here would say that dragon ball is miles better in the dubbed version, but that's probably due to habit (Goku's italian VA was pretty great).
I would say the majority of Italian dubs are better than english ones, but hey, I'm pretty biased.

But that is just outsourcing work. There is nothing Japanese about TMS's works on Warner cartoons, as an example.

European productions like Calimero, Sherlock Hound, Cities of Golds, Maya the Bee, Odysseus 31 and so on are pretty much just anime with overseas budgets and co-creative work.

What exactly is this supposed to matter other than giving Italy some relevance like France? It's not like all the anime on the net as reference is going to disappear, nor is the lack in comparison of just Italian subs.

>>138578693
Nah they had heavy base work for those cartoons, sometimes even full animation by just Japanese. Some of France's stuff is co-creative but the elevens themselves don't actually care to buy since they consider it an outside release. A lot of properties for localization are out for murrica first, then sometimes become a basis for other countries, like how Pokemon names stick etc.

>>
>>138579331

>>
>>138579158
If we're talking western fandom in it's entirety then yes, murrica has pretty large impact. You're posting on this site even, rather than a European one in whatever language that is supposed be suitable for whatever country involved. You can even say China sort of helps whatever countries like bootlegging, including merchandise they spread themselves.
>>
>>138577603
Italy tends to be very good most of the time, too bad every good staple dubber is slowly dying and we aren't seeking new good people while the good dubbers have so many roles sometimes you can't help but be annoyed by their voices since you know them so well.
In fact the new Simpsons episodes are utter shit now that they had to change good part of the main cast, not that it matters anymore anyway since the new seasons are garbage you shouldn't watch anyway.

From the little I saw Spanish dubs are good too.
>>
>>138579384

Population numbers of course rounds out everything, the Anglosphere and China are probably the most important financially.
But for the percentage per capita on who has more anime fans. Itay and France are probably bigger.
>>
>>138578325
Can you name a modern show with a great Italian dub? What classic should I watch in Italian with eng subs?
>>

Same with Germany. Probably the best Homer voice actor passed away a few months ago.
>>
>>138579331
Good for you, but we're on an anime board talking about anime. Take your shit to /int/.
>>
Some french dubs are good (FMA), I even prefer some dubs (Onizuka in GTO is awesome).

We also got some very stupid shit.
Hokuto no ken use to be broadcast on a kid channel. Because the french voice actor and the csa didn't like the anime, and found it too violent for kids (they even say they thought it was a nazi anime, because of the svatiska), they decided that they will only dub the anime if they can change the script.

And so they destroy the dubs. They changed all the technique used by puns (Like they said "Hokuto de cuisine" = Au couteau de cuisine which mean kitchen knife...)
In the same style "Par le hokuto à viande, je couperai vos gigots" = By the meat knife, I will cut your haunches (the meat)"
Raoh become Raoul.
Apparently, the VA even start contest for saying the most random words.
>>
>>138577721

JAJAJAJAJA...no.
>>
>>138578990
>Some of France's stuff is co-creative but the elevens themselves don't actually care to buy since they consider it an outside release
That's not true though. Classic co-produced series like the Moomins and Heidi were very popular in Japan.

Yeah I wouldn't doubt France, can't comment on Italy. Maybe even Mexico or small Asian countries plaster anime because they don't worry about copyrights. The French themselves don't seem admit to having great taste as representation though, with stuff like Naruto being the main discussion. However when you see a gaijin character liking anime in chinese cartoons, it's likely to be murrican.

Molt de gust, em dic Jaume Xavi.

I’m a 27 year old American Cul (Barça fan and Catalonian nationalist for you feixistas). I draw Guadi prints on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and cooking superior Catalonian dishes. (escalivada, escudella, esqueixada)

I train as a casteller every day, this feat of gymnastics can build a human pyramid 50 feet high through the sheer bravado of the men of Catalonia, and is vastly superior to any other tradition on the Iberian peninsula outside of football. I formed my first six-level castell two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Catalá fluently, both the proper langauge of Barcelona and the Valencian dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Catalonian history and their conquest of Mallorca, which I seek to recreate.

When Catalunya secedes and I get my Catalonian visa, I am moving to Barcelona to attend their prestigious football academy to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become a mason at La Sagrada Familia or a paella maker!

I own several Messi jerseys, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Catalonia, so I can fit in easier. I spit at Real fans and speak Catalá as often as I can, but never does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Catalonia!

Catlonia used to make tons of dubs, they got even more anime than Spain in general.

Having said that, and to answer OP's question, here in Spain anime is even more niche than in the states now. It was quite popular with older generations who grew up with dragon ball, mazinger z, Lupin, etc... , but one by one all distributors have closed down until only one, Selecta Vision remains, who barely make new releases and just repackage their old glories to sell to nostalgiafags. TV doesn't dub anime anymore, not even kid's anime much less more adult oriented series. Selecta Vision still hoardsmany of their properties and only make them available in overpriced and hard to come by dvd and br instead of allowing streaming. They do allow some streaming in CR and Netflix, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what they license out and what they don't. The few anime that were dubbed in the last few years before dubbing stopped altogether were horrid, like they weren't even trying anymore.

Don't forget Gurren Lagann, Rurouni Kenshin or even Cowbow Bebop, which I thought was generally really good. GTO is a great dub that does an awesome work at adaptating the slang, but holy shit the language and some references didn't age well.

I don't really remember about Noir and Excel Saga, but most of what aired in La Kaz had pretty great dubs. Or maybe that's just nostalgia goggles. When I watch more recent dubs, like Bakemonogatari's, which is just plain bad, or Nisekoi's, that at least tries, I feel like there's just a lack of interest from the people in charge.
>>
>>138581613
I hadn't heard about Youkai watch, and yeah, Inazuma and Pokemon are about the only animes that are still being dubbed. And they're both for very young children.

Yu-Gi-Oh's not dubbed anymore, Digimon's not dubbed anymore. And there is absolutely zero hope of getting TV to air good more adult ariented anime form the last few years, Madoka, Attack on Titan, OPM, etc... Selecta does dub them, but they're super niche stuff and unless you go to a weeaboo convention or are on the internet, chances are, you won't be even be able to find anyone who knows what the hell they are, much less like them.

>>
>>138582139

>>138581983
Yeah. And digimon around 10 years ago, the dubbed Data Squad with a 4 year delay, starting to air it in 2010 when the series was from 2006. And then they didn't dub Xros Wars at all.

But, I mean, we're all talking about FMAB, Inazuma, Bakemonogatari and Yu-Gi-Oh. Literally zero stuff from the last five years that isn't a long-runner. Anime is dead in Spain outside of the internet and weeaboo conventions, let's face it. Kids were the primary market for it and nowadays all children's tv in this country, not only anime, is dying. Kids watch elrubius now, not TV.

Spain and Italy should make a new fascist empire together to save Europe. We can worry about dubs later.

They kept the censorship, probably because the translation was already done and it was rebroadcast on Virgin 17. However, if the dub itself isn't on par with 2003, the acting is on point. I don't know if there are links for that new dub, but Dybex issued a communiqué on the website they had set up for the series, and it basically said "turns out we only had to ask the original VAs to do it huh". I think the site went down, but you can still read it on wikipedia and there's an article on animeland about it.

>>138582032
I'm not even talking about the translation ("J'ai pas la science infuse, loin de là, mais ce que je sais je m'en souviens très bien !" stands out as one hell of a fuckup), and the acting is okay, but holy shit the voices don't work.

This is true, but subs are an adquired taste, most people don't want to watch subs.

The bad dubs and other general localization industry fuckery drove many of us to subs, we're basically discussing the equivalent phenomenon to 4kids in europe.

French dub of Hokuto no Ken made a pun with the words "Au Couteau that means "Knife's"
So they're are several fighting style who translate to Bread's knife or Meat Knife (" Au couteau à pain" for example)
Some characters are called by French names and I think the dub set the serie in Montelimar.
It's a very funny dub.

Please amigos stop arguing about dubs.

>>
>>138589964
I'd reckon most countries in Europe have been fucked by dubs one way or another. Recently, there was the case of Kazé doing a poor job with the Italian dubs of some shows and films, mainly because they used French VAs.

Ah I see. I understood >>138589628 as a parallel between 4kids and other publishing companies doing a shit job with their dubs, essentially pushing people toward subs, because I honestly can't remember visual censorship that could be as jarring as 4kids' not done by 4kids. I mean, there was the infamous French dub of FotNS, but besides that I don't see anything.
>>
>>138592597

I think German Naruto might be the only European dub where they actually did extra visual edits for whatever reason.
That, and the Dragon Ball GT Disaster where they skipped 13 Episodes and skipped a bunch of shit.
>>
>>138592740
I've heard about the edits to Naruto, but I think that it's the first time I hear about Dragon Ball GT. Why did they remove so many episodes? Is it once again that federal agency that indexes media "harmful to minors" or something like that? Germany is so strict when it comes to that.

Now that I think about it though, the French dub of DBZ had bits removed, mainly characters being killed. Current broadcasts use uncut versions but since those removed bits never got dubbed, there are episodes when you suddenly hear Japanese and that can catch you off-guard.

It has nothing to do with a federal agency, or any kind of authority. Infact the authority that checks it things are suitable for TV, never had much bad to say about the Anime broadcasted. I remember when Club Dorothee got cancelled because of soccer mums and self acclaimed critics.Same stuff happened in Germany.
Hwoever instead of getting rid of "problematic" anime, they decided to hire soccermums themselfs to edit their anime.

Italyfag here , i'll try to recap Anime tv airing in Italy 1/2

middle '70:
Barbapapà and Heidi started it all. Dubbers were decent for the time, but dubbing was cheap.(mono sound, AM radio-like recording..)
Few dubbers altered voices to dub multiple secondary characters in the same show.

end '70:
The giant robot invasion and more : UFO Robot, Mazinger, Goldrake, Captain Harlock
and then ALMOST all robot shows from japan were dubbed especially for private local TVs that were a new thing for Italy,at that moment-we were used to the canonical 2 channels of state TV.
Every fucking kid loved giant robots at that time, i still remember a myself jumping from the kitchen table impersonating Mazinger... dubbing was still cheap but good

'80 Private TV's big animu boom!
This was a second boom, many local private tv's imported bazillions of cheap (well i guess) anime series, many of which of the past decade or so : Galaxy express, more mecha animu, Future boy Conan, sports animu and many Shojo ... Tokimeki tonight, the early little witches
Dubbing was mediocre at best

mid '80 Fininvest (national private tv) and the start of censorship
more anime were dubbed by fininvest, technical dubbing was better, but many were butchered and censored from all sexual scenes , nude, and especially Japan referrals, including names and places. I remembered the extreme butchering of Kimagure orange road (sometimes you couldn't follow the plot..)
On the other hand they've aired lots of good shows, Creamy mami Emi and all the other "lil' witches", Touch,Cat's eye,Nanako SOS and Pollon,Georgie,Hello Spank and many others i can't remember now.
One of the last big shows i remember watching was Slayers, mid '90.

Bobobo dub was pure gold.

Cowboy Bebop and Death Note had niece dubs. Evangelion was not bad.

The others were pure shit. Usually because of how they were translated rather than the VA, who are usually top tier, although they're so few that you once you watch one or three shows you start hearing the same voices over and over again. And it is incredibly annoying.

Italy 2/2

mid '80 early '90 local tvs
Reruns galore : I swear every animu shit made in japan from '70 and '80 was shown on those tvs - hokuto no ken and LUM in primis ... oh god Lum.. and it wasn't censored! Her tits from the first episode are still burned in my retina, lol
Notable stuff i remember, Maison ikkoku, Dash kappei, Sanpei (you know the fisherman kid) ,Tiger Mask, and MANY more i can't remember now

mid '90 the little depression

National tv slowed down a lot. I can't remember any notable anime.
Fininvest continued buying rights even in the nineties, i still remember Slayers and Sailor Moon, Nadia the secret of bue water, still heavily butchered.
They start importing american tv toons.
Private local tvs remained as the animu stronghold, they started airing dragonball ,Ranma , and others
Still notable Patlabor and City Hunter imported and airing in local tvs

middle to end '90 Independent dubbers for home video!
and mtv animu galore
Yamato video and dynamic start dubbing lots of anime for home video. Cowboy bebop , golden boy, Trigun . The quality of dubs rises by a great margin, no more censorship. MTV italia buys airing rights, MTV becomes the animu stronghold of late '90 early 2000.

Private tvs and national tv still have their own dubbing companies, the quality varies from anime to anime, some are still censored, less than in the past.
>>
>>138595180
To be fair, only names that would get unnecessarily long don't get translated in Spain. 'El Hombre Araña' sounds less pleasing than 'Spiderman', because is much longer. While 'Deadpool' or 'Wolverine' have been always been translated.
>>
>>138581983
Yu-gi-oh only dubed until the end of Battle City and GX the first season

>>138582247
Xros Wars is dubed with the name of Digimon Fusion
>>
>>138595586
actually I dont care that much if the name is properly translated, thus "Hombre Araña" and "Spiderman" sounds equally good to me
now, when they go full retard and translate those with whatever came from their asses thats when I get pissd off

other thing that triggers me its when they cant proper pronounce english/foreign words, like in "Espidermán" and alike

The '80 censorship was made by the same Fininvest dubbers, in the name of the prudish and Catholic Italy of the time

Good lord, here in Italy we have the MOIGE which is an association of prudish parents, but they formed in the mid '90 and they've helped mantaining the censorship on anime in tv till recent times.

No problems with MTV aired anime and vhs or dvd companies, tho
>>
>>138594218
Club Dorothée got cancelled because TF1 were prissy assholes who couldn't take the fact that AB were setting up their own cable TV package opposite TPS: they first cut the show from the whole afternoon to like 45 minutes for one year, and then they just cancelled it. The worst controversies happened way before that: FotNS, Kinnikuman, Oniisama e..., that's 1989-93. Even the worst controversy about DBZ was early in the run of the club.

And then the only way to watch anime (that wasn't Pokémon or Digimon) was to get a subcription to Canal +, until 2004.

I'd say the only interest was commercial. Dubs were average at best, they cut to commercials whenever... Sure, it helped make anime a bit more mainstream, but that wasn't good. I talked about it earlier in that thread, but La Kaz really was the best anime programming on the main TV channels.
