It has Ikuhara's standard for carrying a message within his shows, but the show itself was actually really boring and most of the characters sucked, so I'd say I was ultimately pretty ambivalent about it.

The show had plenty of potential, but it was ultimately mediocre.
You could tell Ikuni had plenty of ideas he wanted to develop in this show, but given it was 1-cour, it all fell grotesquely rushed, especially Kureha and Ginko's relationship which was the main focus of the show.
There were 2 things I could conclude from YKA. The first is something MPD had already made clear, Ikuni is a great director, but he shouldn't write. He really needs to find a good writer, and he should limit himself to directing. Second, he's a 90s director through and through. He shouldn't direct a 1-cour show again. He should work with 2-cour at least, and even then, I would say he's better off with more episodes, since even in MPD (a 2-cour shows), plenty of ideas seemed to have been underdeveloped, or simply never developed at all.
As far as YKA is concerned, the best thing about it was Mitsuko in my opinion. Hell, I loved the work Aoi Yuuki did on her. It was spectacular.

It's just that pretty much any series out there has "themes" and quite many "symbolism". Granted, the show was trying to tell something, but that in itself doesn't make it outstanding. And what I'm talking with 3deep5u faggots was when there was iirc some shit about "technological advancement" even on the first episode based on like two frames even though it was never even in lines with the themes of the show, but there must be deep symbolism because Ikuhara is a deep writer!
So in conclusion as I said it was a "fun" series but my autism cannot take the people who treat it as godsend masterpiece because it's made by Ikuhara. Naturally criticizing autists isn't legitimate criticism towards the show itself.

Can someone explain to me the appeal of Ikuhara's symbolism?
I watched both Utena and Penguindrum, and judge them as good (not great), but found the symbolism to be more annoying than anything, almost detracting at some points (I also tried reading about them after completing them).
I want to be upfront and say that I really like NGE and it's strange to me that often NGE's symbolism is described as unnecessary by the same users who then praise Ikuhara's symbolism.
I don't think NGE's symbolism to be deep or whatever, but I found it intriguing and cool, while I found Penguindrum's and Utena to be pretty meh.
I don't want to turn this in a NGE vs Utena /Penguindrum, I'm just looking for explanations.

I like Eva for the characters, interaction and psychology, and I don't think the symbolism is anything other than a background.
It seems to me that Eva makes perfect sense without the symbolism aspects, while I can't make sense of Ikuhara's work without it.
