I very rarely see this series brought up, even rarer to be discussed. What does /a/ think of it? I loved the three movies so much, I've considered buying the novel to give it a shot and learn a little more (I don't read much).

Also, recommendations similar to this? I was amazed when I discovered it long ago and could use more.

Obligatory shameless self-bump.

The novel is worth it. Go buy it.

I'm a huge fan of the series. I liked all three movies, I bought the novel, and the manga. I'll admit the manga doesn't add much but the art is from Yoshitoki Oima (Chick who wrote and Drew Koe no Katachi) and I love her. I dunno what the rest of /a/ thinks of it though.

Cool. It'll actually be my first novel of the sort. Good way to start the slippery slope as any, I guess.

Still no recommendations? I wonder what percentage of /a/ has seen this, though.

First movie was amazing, second and third were garbage. I really hate how they threw away character screen time to focus on shitty card game and I don´t even remember what the second movie was about.

Squandered opportunity. I will still recommend people to only watch the first movie to this date.
>>
>>138525931
But the OST, animation, voice acting, world building, characterization, and the action was dope in all 3. Maybe I can't see through my fanboy goggles but they were all pretty good to me

I just watched it week ago, loved nearly everything about it. Finally something that made me give a shit in a long time

Oeufcoque a best

Gay talking dolphins, a man covered in sewed-on tits, a sudden obsession with Casino Royale, a squandered cyberpunk setting, and a heroine that was clearly someone on the production team's perfect flawless waifu.
Was worth watching it with friends for a good laugh and for the dub's mouse VA.

A real fan would see it´s flaws. You´re just being blind and ignorant. No offense meant of course, but there is some very good reason why it never took of to be another classic like say GiTS, even though they are very different franchise with different messages/morals.

The three movies have limited run time, and one should fully be aware on how to spend them. One should be fully invested in the characters, but one does not when not enough screen time is spend on them. The doctor (l even forgot their names, that´s just how forgettable they´re to me) really needed to be fleshed out, and the team as a whole needed to interact with each other a whole fucking lot more than they did. I´m not buying that they´re a close knitted bunch when I don´t get to see them develop into it, be it by a scene or two.

OST was nothing amazing, or I would have bought the soundtrack, which I have done on shitty shows just because the OST were amazing even though the shows were shit.

World building were lacking. Even though the glimpse we got to see were amazing, it wasn´t enough.

Voice acting was fine, except the mouse which sounded neither A.I (was the mouse A.I? I forgot) nor fitting for what it was. It tried to be emotional, but the delivery was wooden.

Believe me when I say I want to love it, I wanted to love it so very very bad. Pussyhand or whatever his name was was a memorable fellow, more so than the final guy hunting the girl down. See, all forgettable.

1st movie was great though.

Right, it dragged on and didn´t really give a good payoff. Don´t even make me remember the blackjack game at the end. It went on and on and on for half the movie.
>>
>>138525931
While I'll agree that the second movie was easily the low point, I'll still say the third was a good ramp back into the action. Still nothing like the first. The first was so intense, the second felt like a deserved break to take in the stunning visuals of Eden. Though yes, the casino scenes went on far too long.

>Oeufcoque a best
Mah nigga. Though I'm pretty sure this is everyone's feeling about the series.
>>
>>138526519
>Boring rodent the best
Wow there buddy, don´t assume that. There weren´t any good characters in the movie. Except say maybe Harvet and Wing. Is so lacking in character development for the colourful cast, I will go and say my fav is Mary Sue Balot because there isn´t much good to pick from. I need to add, I really hated how they tried to make the pimp sympathetic with his cringe back story.
>>
All three movies were complete garbage. I would rather watch GiTS ARISE again.

I think the soundtrack was great contextually but not alone. I ain't saying the movie was perfect, it had its flaws. I'm just saying I enjoyed them. Also, no offense, but the "it was bad because I forgot" speech has always seemed like a fools argument to me. Testifies more to the critic's own memory and attention span rather than the film. I do find it rather peculiar that you don't remember Oeufcoque considering that he was one of the more notable characters. The interaction between him and Rune Balot was really well done and revolved around him being an A.I. Once again, not saying the film doesn't have issues, it had its fair share. All I'm saying is that the whole "forgettable" argument is dumb and that the relationship between Rune Balot and Oeufcoque was good.

>perfect flawless waifu
>can't talk
Wonder what was going on here?

>>138526414
>I wanted to love it so very very bad.
Not him, but I feel you. Even so, I took to loving it anyway. I kind of think that the first movie could almost stand alone, cliffhangars and all.

>>138526770
>make the pimp sympathetic with his cringe back story
This. I was waiting for some big reveal, then just kind of sat there wondering if they really just forced that in my face. Squandered potential indeed, but a shitter like me seems to somehow like things that could have been.

Do the characters get fleshed out any more in the novel, by chance?

I liked the style more than the substance.

1st = 8/10
2nd = 1/10
3rd = 1/10
Went from flash and potential to flash and no substance. I didnt even have anything against the faggot dolphin scene.

>nice gets bro
Also yeah as much as I preach about how much I liked the movies, it was mostly the style. I'm the type of person who falls in love with stylized pretentious shows and unique art styles, so I really enjoyed Mardock Scramble.

>>138527132
Hence why I keep asking for recommendations, to no avail. Even if it's shitty, I'll give it a shot.
>>
>>138527132
When you get older/have more experience, not saying you´re young and I´m old, you tend to want substance more than you want style.
>>
>>138525931
This. The first movie was great, the rest squandered around so much that the third film had such a hard time picking up the pieces back together. And when it finally did, the payoff just wasn't as satisfying as it could have been.
>>
To this day I still have no idea how to play Black Jack so you can imagine how confused I was for a uncomfortably large chunk of the series.
>>
>>138527290
You get two cards, if it´s close to 21 you win, if it´s not, you can get more card, but if they add up to over 21 you lose. Is not a hard game to grasp the basic on. And it wasn´t all that important to get the BJ to get the movies. You could remove the whole casino scene and nothing would be worse. It was shit.
>>
>>138527220
Well I'm only 22 and I picked up anime only a couple years ago so you probably do have seniority. But the way I see it, style is just as important as substance. Even if the writing for a show is good, if it doesn't have a unique style I'll often grow tired of it very fast. However, I will admit that there are situations where a show can be carried on substance. I'll be hard pressed to refute you if you claim that there aren't situations where the style can carry a show as well though.

Just rewatched this after 5 years and remembered it ends on a cliffhanger.
