Sometimes I forget /a/ hasn't actually watched anything but the top-crop OVAs from the 80s.
We remember only the good ones, but if you go digging, you'll find a lot that have some great and sometimes unique artistry, but are a complete mess in terms of story and direction.
Take Genmu Senki Leda here. I love the art and style going into it.
But it feels like the jumbled Cliff's Notes to a novel.
Incidentally, there IS a novel of it that came out shortly after the OVA. Can't really find any solid information on it though.

My point is, I'm okay with stories being weak and shallow on substance so long as they're not offensively bad. Just as long as I get pretty shiny lights flashing in front of my eyes, I can usually find myself reasonably entertained.
The 80s OVAs were a boon for animators and animation directors to experiment and do wonderful and unique things, but it also showed why most of them weren't writers.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this. I'm loving the art, but there's always the possibility that it will be SnK with zombies and trains and just trying hard to be edgy for the sake of edgy.
Only time will tell how good or bad it may be.

Most of the old OVAs aren't particularly good at that either, though. On a micro-level, sure, scenes might come across well, but you laugh at the overall direction it takes.
It won't save anime, and I doubt people will even pay attention to it other than "zomg dodack on didan studio", but fuck yeah it's Mikimoto and I am all about that.
