It was the best mecha show I had seen when it came out and it is still the best today. It gets shit on quite a lot today because it got too popular and hipsters always gonna hipster
It's a show for manly souls!
It has a shitton of flaws, but it's fun, and it never stops being fun, even after the show goes on a different direction with the time skip.

That doesn't say anything about the qualities of TTGL, I find it overrated myself, but the thing is that when others copy a successful show (this goes beyond anime), it naturally leads to shittier copies of it being made.

Gurren Lagann isn't exactly novelty either, it has its fair share of anime cliches, but it's so well done that everything feels right.
